They arc topped with blue lights. They are everywljere. What ai-e they? They are call boxes. Equipped with blue lights on top, call boxes are spread all around According to security officer Timmy Morris, call boxes are for students who need assistance in case of an emergency. To seek help, all one has to do is press the button on the call box. and every security officer on campus will be noti fied exactly where assistance is needed. Monis also stressed that to say anything llirougb the call box. one must keep the button held down while spe:iking. Morris explained that call boxes can be used for, “;uiy practical use" students need. “ Aitlwugh the main reason for the boxes is for emergencies, people can save a few steps if tltey.have a flat tire or needs car assistance.” Morris said. Junior Lianne Jolly believes that even Ehougl) Meredith is a small campus, it is still a good idea to have tlie call boxes. "They are worib it," she said. “If someone were coming after me, all 1 would have to do to get help is go tt> a call box.” ThCTe are 10 call boxes on tbe Meredith campus. Tbe boxes are spread out in various places such as the parking lots, on tbe Meredith mile, and near the infirmary. Call boxes have been located on Meredith's campus for approximately seven or eight years. Morris said the boxes are used “ou the average three or four times a month.” He explained that the boxes have not been used for any major emergencies, that they are mostly used for “flat tires and dead batteries." The call boxes are lo help protect tbe people of the Meredith coimnunity, yet some students, especially freshmen, are unaware about their puipose and functions. Freshman Traci Tucker commented, “If I was ever in an emergency situation, 1 would not know how to operate a call box.” Unlike Tucker, who has seen the boxes around campus, freshman Krista Rivenbark said, “I’ve never noticed them." Morris said there has not been any sort of group session to inform students how to use tbe call boxes, but all an inc|uiring student would have to do is, call tbe.securily i)ffice. “We would be glad to show anybody at any time how to use them,” Morris said. “Iknow studentsget mad at us because we give them piirking tickets and boot cars, but we are here to help protect tlie people and pn)perty.” In this issue; * 'i'his weeks Letters Gditor addrcss i‘:iiii|his concerns. * Eating Disorders: The i^fdurth in the Body Image «erfes. ^ The Herald review 1 MCTV's new talk show, "Wake Up Meredith.” Pages 8
