As David moves to London and devotes his life to his music, we see the eccenthc, erratic, quirky personality of a genius unfold. Music is his passion, bis sole purpose for living and when be e^^periences a severe seizure after a competition, be is banned ftom playing because the doctors say it could kill him. His uacoaventionality escalates into insanity without bis lifeline and he moves back to Australia where, after many years of struggling and wandering, be gets back his life and hismusicwhenhefalls in love with a woman—fmally someone to lovehiminretum. Tbe {ffoblem is that one can't sum this movie in one paragraph. Those are the bare bones, but tbere are volumes more to Shine. The acting is monumental on all counts and the music is inconceivably movmg. Tbe passions, the inspirations and joys that triumph over tbe sadness and abuse in Helfgott’s life are expressed beautifully and completely through tbe emotional complexity in selections from Chopin, RachmaoinolT, and Mozart (just to name a few). There are hand-doubles for the actors wbo play the younger David, but Geo^rey Rush, as the older David, plays the piano himself. He gives a commanding performance of the slightly detached genius and is my pick for this year's Best Actor award (for which be is nominated also). Music does wonders for the soul. It speaks to that in all of us which appreciates and longs for beauty and harmony. Shine will fill that void and leave you speechless and inspired. BANDS continued from page 5 ... On Fiiday night. Lake Boone was happening after tbe annoying band that I don't know the name of Anally got off the stage and Far Too Jones started playing. Raleigb is home to many of Far Too’s friends and I think 1 may have even spotted some parents in the crowd. Tbe audience was mixed and there were even some “Solid Gold” dancer wannabees. Granted they didn’t come with the band, but bass guitarist Jason Marks told them they could get in free if they dressed up ($5 is not worth it to me U) dress up in black and gold sequins). ‘The show was good and tbe music was upbeat and engaging”, according to senior Jaime Morris. Their new release Crawling Out From Undef was also on sale. Keep an eye out for the next time Vertical Horaon and Far Too Jones are coming through Raleigh. If you want to support these college bands. CDs can be purchased at the Record Excbaoge in Mission Valley. wmme~m memmimss Meredith's new talk show is now showing Tune In to channel 12 Wednesday, March 5 at 4-:00 pm Career Connections Meredith College Career Center Junior & Sophomore Career Center Orientations MARCH EVENTS Career Center Orientadons CooM to (boa workibopt desftwd for Sophoaont ud Jimion ud get acquiisted wiib Tbe Ctncr CaoKr St(S You’D g«c y«ur See JtoiMW £90> iXnUae «s4 (ei t be>d nin 00 dovelopmg your neuoic &f thet inemilBp, eo4p, er amDcr |ob you've been looidag tbri Fridiy.
