that the juniors so desperately want; it
is the bragging rights that go along
with this age-okj junior/seniorrivalry.
The event began in 1906 when a
crook was donated to the senior class
to i«)motc$piriLTbeseniorclass hides

guiding them (or not) (o tbe biding
place in a week-long search by daily
clues that are posted in ihe cafelcria. If
tbe juniors find Ihe crook, the seniors
must tie a black ribbon on ii in Class
Day. However, if thejuniors don’t
find it, tbe crook dons tbe senior colors
on Class Day.
Here are a few of the very specific
rules of tbe “Hiding of Ihe Crook” that
have been banded down through tbe
years:
1) one incb of tbe crotA must be
visible at aii times; must be
accessible 24 hours per day
2) must be hidden on campus
3) cannot be bidden in trees or on
roofs
4) only juniors can loc^ for it
5) must be
displayed in the
dining ball one
week before tbe
bunt begins
6) tbe clues
given by tbe
seniors can’t be
coded; tbey
must be
straigbtf(Mward (not using “mail”
for “male”, etc.)
7) if and when found, tbe junicw
class president must officially
present it lo tbe senior class
president for verification
8) only senior class officers and
advisers know where tbe crook is
bidden
This year,accordiogtosenior class
president, Jonna Anderson, the seniors
“jusi had liin with tbe clues.” Tbeclues
are as follows:
Day 1: “Round and round and
round you go ... Where (be crook is
only Jonna, Krisdn. Angie. Cindy and
Melinda know!"
Day 2: “Our many colored days at
Meredith are abnost through; good
luck. Juniors, hunting anddecifidiering
our clues!”
Day 3: “It’s a whole new world
kx)king for tbe sticky; better beware,
"A black bow on the crook is no skin
off anybody's back, but we*d love to
see our colors too."
- Jonna Anderson, senior
we can be pretty (ricky. Spring has
flung at ol’ MC (ee). you belter use this
weekend wisel (ee)!”
Day 4) ‘"We won' t (ell you a tale,
(be air may be s(ale, but don’t give up
00 (bis ambiguous trail!”
Day 5) “It’s been a 3-ring circus of
hunting for you. There are 2 days left
so don’t be blue. Surely by now you
narrowed 226 to a few.”
Anderson says that tbe hardest
(bing about the hunt for the crocdt isn’t
necessarily deciphering the clues, but
“looking for the needle in the bay-
slack” on Meredith’s expansive cam
pus.
It seems, though, for junior class
president Rebecca Huffstetler and her
felk>w classmates that finding a needle
in a haystack isn’t a daunting task.
HulTstetler asserted that the juniors
“plan on fmding” tbe crook despite
“random” clues. One reason for (heir
confidence
could be (be

their plan of attack. Sounds like they
mean war.
However, as seriously as both
classes take the annual Crook Hunt,
the event is balanced out by good-
natured competition and heartfelt class
spirit. Anderson captured tbe nature of
this beloved tradition as she staled, “If
they find it. congratulations to (hem. A
black bow on tbe crook is no skin off
anybody’s back, but we’d love to see

from beach hits to rap filled the air at
this year’s spring fomial on Saturday,
April 19.
Approximately 300 - 350 students
and tbeir dates attended the formal.
Recognizing friends was challenging,
and identifying peers from class was
virtually impossible, since students
fioally decided to come out of their
official Meredith College uniforms of
plaid, flannel paints and over sized
sweatshirts.
Seeing students wearing hose,
heels and makeup all at the same time
was defmitely a switch. Every kind of
dress imaginable entered the doors of
tbe Raleigh Civic Center. The Angel
dress variety included long, short, se
quins. lace, feminine, innocent and
even risqu6! AU of the chairs were
toaded with tuxedo jxkcts as the roast
ing young men broke it down on tbe
dance floor.
The spring formal
dance committee was
made up of mx studeats
including freshmen
Claire Ciray and Alison
Thomas, sophomores
Amy Duckwall and Jen-
nifo* Hobbs, and Juniors
Tammy Broughton and
Sheridan Whitty.
Hobbs commented
that tbe committee has
been woiking on gelling

weeks. “Our first meet

before spring break, and
we met once a week, ev-

Junior Ashley l..ane agreed “The
