October 22,1997 Meredith Hcra]i1 Campus Extras Summer school fun abroad REBECUHUFSmia CuntWiile* Wheo I flew out of the RDU air port May 23,1997 to participate in the ten-week Merediib Abroad program, I knew I was in for an exciting summer, but I never predicted that it would cbange my life tbe way it did. I knew my summer would be filled with studying and traveling. 1 was fi nally going to see first-hand all of the historical landmarks and various coua- tries wbicb I had only heard about in school. I was also going to learn about an history, British Parliament, and cul tural psychology while I traveled from Italy to England. Although I learned much valuable infonnation in my trav els and studies, it was tbe simple les sees in life which I learned from vari ous people and situations that made tbe greatest tmpaaon me. The sights I had the oppoitunity to see were just amazing. 1 was in awe as I stood in St. Peter’s cathedral in Vatican Ci^. 1 loved the gondola sing ers wbo serenaded us in Venice. And I never saw artwork which was even close 10 being beautiful in the Swiss Alps. 1 still have (rouble putting words (0 die array of emotions which 1 felt in Dachau, Germany. Kim: What's a nice girl like you doing in a place like New York? Making money. I did a lo(of national tours after college, including 42nd Su%ct. Eventually, 1 settled in New York. Kim: Was lhal a cbiMhood dream of yours? Beth: No. I did a show my senior year in high school and the thought crossed my mind, but basically 1 was clueless. Kim: You mean you had no idea about what you were going to do at Meredith? Beth: No, I really was clueless. But after 1 got here, I auditioned for Winnie the Pooh — I played Rabbit to Cadiy’s Pooh—Igot laughs, and I was addicted. Kim: But there was no theat^ major then, right? Belli: That’s true. I minored in dieacer, and somewhere in my junior year I realized I had no major. Oops! But I did have a lot of credits in soci ology and social work, so that’s what my transcript says. Kim: Enough of this serious stuff. It’s time for “Five Questions” (apolo gies to Craig iCilbom and The Daify Slunv). What was your dream role in college and your dream role now? Beth: Fanny Brice in Fumy Girl, and ... Fanny Brice in Funny Girt. Kun: What’s the avenue I’m tak ing you to? Beth: Forty-second Street Kim: Wbo would you rather figbt for the part of Rizzo: Rosie or Xena? Beth: Xena. The fight would be more interesting, and I can take Rosie anytime. Kim: Is it true that you only did stuff because Cathy did it? Beth: Heck no! She copied me. Kim: And finally. L know your folks still live in Raleigh. Do you like calling North Carolma home? Beih: You betcha. • WATTSTAFF • • cocscs* • DELIVERY DRIVERS • Great Tipsf EnwttHil pmy Mid FT FT p«*iaef» •mbbk.
