November 19,1997 Campus Opinion POINT COUNTERPOINT Should Meredith College provide birth control to its students?* • "Merediib Deeds to recognize ibatmauy women are ignorant wheaitcomestobinbcmtiol— Help them out!” • "Provided means given wbeo asked for. If you didn’t need tliem, tiieu you wouldn’ibave to bave them.” • "Wby go to a clluic wben it would be easier to get tbem here? Y’ali provide fiu shots to prevent the flu. Why not provide birth control to help prevent pregnancy?” • To all the No's: Birth control acts as a prevention of pregnancy but as a hormonal balancer. Besides, do you want to bave to pay for another unplanned pregnancy? We need to start facing the ^cts. People need to be aware of their cations. Yes, I do, call myself a Christian and I do practice safe sex. A year ago, 1 may bave said no, but now lean see how beneficial the pill is. We need to face the ^t that sex is out there, and most of us do it." •'Refusing to distribute condoms is notgoing to change the fact that people have sex. Far from encouraging women to have sex, the availability of birth control would only help us do it more respcfflsibly.” • "If we want birth conut>l, and there was a high demand we should be able to receive birth control in a confidential way from the infirmary.” • ’A lot of people are sayiug 'buy it yourself.' What if you don’t have the $. you are doing your best to make it through college? What is ilie answer to that?” • NOTE: The preceding contributions are student responses to the Joyner Hall graffiti board. "Point" represents those in favor of Meredith’s Health Center's offering birth control, while "Counterpoint" represents those opposed. • "Flu shots and birth control are liardly the same thing! The flu is sometUing tliatyou can catch, you don’t catch pregnancy. The responsibility of caring for a child can hardly be connected with the flu. True, condoms pevent pregnancy, but the real issue is moral. If Meredith still upheld values, this question should not be an issue.” • "Buy it yourself!” • "Thiok with your head not your lionnones.” • "As women we should be able to take respousibility for our actions, not depend on someone else! I would Uke the fact it would be given to us for free, but we would probably have another increase in tuition! Think, Ladies!” • "If you are responsible enough to make the decisiou of having sex, you should be responsible enough to buy birth control on your own. Sex is both an issue of morality and health!!” • "If we want Meredith to stay out of our personal lives, we shouldn't invite it in.” . • "Meredith is an educational institution—not a clinic. We. as educated responsible adults (and educated w»nen), should have tlie sense to provide our own birth control. Not only that, but Meredith should look closo' into women’s right (like the right to say “No” to sex). Let us make our own choices without personal interference from a SCHOOL. i.e. education provider not a condom provider.” • "Would you ask this college to provide for your drug habits? No! Wby would [you] ask for the college to provide bin!) control? Sex is much like a drug; once you start it's hard to stop.” • "Sex is a private thing, and if you want to practice it, it's not the public or tlie school’s responsibility to provide you with birth control.” • "The best form of birth couu'ol is self control.” • "Masturbate instead!” Career Connections Meredith College Career Center How to Write an Elective Resume: Providing tips on how to develop and structure a professional resume. • Friday, Nov. 21,10:00 a.m. CO-OP CONNECTIONS Detailing paid spring and summer co>op and internship positions.
