The Meredith Entertainment As sociation sponsored the event and sup plied free sandwiches, chips, and drinks for the performers and the audience. Kristin Young, president of MEA, was pleased with the turnout “This has been a great opportunity for the students to take a break from tlieir studies and laugh a lot," Young said. “Not only do the Have Nots just entertain us, but they require audience participation, and that keeps everyone on their toes.” Bryan, oneof the Have Nots, said, “We always have a terrific time every time we come. The group's comedy bits include “The Debate,” which iuvolves asking audience members to yell out topics tliat do not relate. The comedy group then debates on tliera. The debate picked by the Meredith audience was the opposing views of an astronomer and physiologist on why the Chic-Fil- Acowscannotspell.Oihergameswere takes place almost every Thursday night during the semester. The audi ence first watches the Friends televi sion series on the wide screen TV in Cate at 8:00 p.m. Then acampus orga nization or departmental group spon sors an event after the show. Look for flyers and updates about what will be ahead for Coffee With Friends next semester; they are all Musi Sees'. Meredith students and staff select Who’s Who Weems to retire in 1999 □ student Life invited various students and staff to participate in the process. STACEY D£IANIY Miiep)iter The 1998 edition of WIw’s Who Among Students in American Univer sities and Colleges will include the names of 30 students from Meredith College who have been selected as oational outstanding campus leaders. Campus nominating committees and editors of the aimual directory have included the names of these stu dents based on their academic achieve ment, service to the community, lead ership in extracurricular activities and potential for continued success. The selection committee reviews nominations made by KIM HIGHLAND Wiroiiittliiel Norman Kellum, chairman of the Meredith College Board of Trustees, has announced the retirement of Dr. John Edgar Weems, president of Meredith College, effective June of 1999. Kellum made tJie an nouncement during tlie Novem ber 24 meeting with the board’s executive committee. “John Weems has led Meredith to a position of great strength and prommence,” said Kellum. “Meredith is perfectly positioned to capitalize on his leadership, and we are coufideut we will do so. While it will be impossible to replace Dr, Weems, a search committee will be ap pointed to fmd a person who can build on the strong foundation that is his legacy.” Kellum also ajniounced that Charles Taylor, executive vice president, assisted by Meredith’s Se- niorManagement Team, will adminis ter tlie planning and operatioiiaJ func tions of (he College until a new presi dent is selected. “This will ensure con tinuity of leadership during this period of transitioD,” said Kellum. Weems, president since 1971. will be on sabbatical leave from July 1, 1998 until his retirement on June 30, 1999. Following his retirement, Weems will assume the role of president emeri- tus assisting with the College's fundraising efforts.
