Hints to current and future computer users RUTH ANN SAlUt OnctocIechaologvStiws If you ate getting a computer for Christmas or bringing a computer to campus for the spring semester, you may be able to have your computer connected to thecampus netwoik.Tliat means you will be able to access e* mail, the campus Intranet and the Internet (Web pages) right form your room. However, not every computer can be connected to the network. Only Win dows based (Windows 3ji and Win dows 95) computers can be connected. Also there are minimum hardware re quirements: ♦ For Windows 3.s 486 PC, 40 MHz os fastw, 8 MB RAM, 40 MB available disk space, 1 available ISA slot, 1 available IRQ • For Windows 95: Pentium PC. 100 MHz or faster, 16 MB RAM, 60 MB available disk space, 1 available PCI or ISA slot, 1 available IRQ Not every computer will success fully configure and connect to the cam pus network. Technology Services will refund payment in tbe rare case where that occurs. Also, no Macintosh com puters will be connected to the cam pus network. If your computer meets the mini mum requirements and you would like it connected fo the network, visit the CamTel/CaiiiCard Office on the fu^t tioor of Johnson Hall. There is a form to fill out and payment is re quired at that time. Tiie cost is S150 for a desktop unit and S250 for a laptop. Tliis is a Hie-time fee and includes a technician from the Office of Technology Services coming to your dorm room to install a network card and aU necessary software, and configure die computer. Once you have completed the form and pay ment, a technician will call you to schedule the insiaU. Connecting yourcmnputerto tlie campus network uses network ca bling. not telephone cabling. That means surfmg the net is much fasto' than using a modem and telephone line; and using your computer on tbe network does not tie up your phone, so you can still make aud receive calls.
