The “We Are Family” Foiaim
held by the Student Life
Committee in second floor Cate
Center lounge February 9 was
designed to hear the concerns of
the Meredith Community.
Meredith Lovelace, senior and
Student Life Chair, headed the
discussion. About thirty people
attended the forum, including
Georgianna Vasquez, president
of WINGS, Paula O’Briant,
director of housing, Shelly
Hoover, assistant director of stu

Bumgarner, director of First Year
Experience, and Sharon Cannon,
dean of students and academic
advising.
“This forum was held in a
location that helped more com

attend,” said Bumgarner. “The

main goal was to reach people,
and that was one of the strongest
aspects of this one.”
A wealth of issues were dis
cussed, from safety issues to
cafeteria concerns. Among many
of the issues the students brought
up were whether the Cate Center
should serve fun or study,
whether part-time students
should be eligible for the Dean's
list, how the campus might pro
vide more affordable daycare for
idcnce halls early last
Wednesday morning. The fire
itself was contained in the sec
ondary boiler room behind Belk
Dining Hall by the Raleigh Fire
Department who arrived on the
scene eight minutes after smoke
was first reported.

and how to reduce speeding on

“Students were evacuated due
to a possibility of smoke seeping
into the residence halls through
the tunnels,” said Campus Police
Chief Mike Hoke.
“Students were returned to
residence halls as quickly as the
residence halls were deemed
habitable.”
According to Marketing and
Communications Director
Jeanoie Morelock, WRAL-TV
was notified by a student that the
fire alarms in Vann did not go
off. As Morelock explained to
the station’s reporter, special cir
cumstances in Vann necessitated
special evacuation procediu-es.
TTie station dropped the story.
“The decision was made not to
pull the alarms in Vann,” said
Morelock. “It was far apart
enough in proximity from the
fire that its residents were not at
immediate risk. Plus, one of the
evacuation areas for Vann is
actually closer to the dining

Last week, students and staff
had the opportunity to learn
about psychology and related
subjects during Psychology
Week, sponsored by the
Psychology Club. Sessions were
held each night except
Wednesday. These sessions were
designed to help students learn
more about psychology and
related areas.
On Monday and Tuesday in
the Cate Center, a successful
bake sale was held. Monday
evening, psychology professor
Dr. David Heining-Boynton pre
sented a session on relation
ships, including family relation
ships, friendships, and romantic
relationships.
Graduate students in psychol
ogy from ECU llj a discussion
about getting into graduate
school. Similarly, Meredith
graduates from 1991 and 1995
with degrees in psychology dis
cussed possible careers for psy
chology majors who haven’t
attended graduate school on
Thursday night.
Friday evening was the cli
max of the week. At 6 pm. a din
ner was held in Dogwood Suite
in Belk Dining Hall. This dinner
gave students and professors to
get to know one another as indi
viduals. Dr. Marie Mason
received the alumna award at tJie
dinner.
Dr. Lyn Aubrecht, psychology
professor, enjoyed the week
because it “gave some individu
als a chance to identify with psy
chology as more than simply
taking classes.” He also said that
he thought there was a good
variety of students present, and
that these students benefited
whether they had specific inter
ests in psychology or just want
ed to get a general overview of
psychology.
