LISA GILLIAM Staff Reporter The “We Are Family” Foiaim held by the Student Life Committee in second floor Cate Center lounge February 9 was designed to hear the concerns of the Meredith Community. Meredith Lovelace, senior and Student Life Chair, headed the discussion. About thirty people attended the forum, including Georgianna Vasquez, president of WINGS, Paula O’Briant, director of housing, Shelly Hoover, assistant director of stu dent activities, Chrissie Bumgarner, director of First Year Experience, and Sharon Cannon, dean of students and academic advising. “This forum was held in a location that helped more com muter and WINGS students to attend,” said Bumgarner. “The □ Five dorms evacuat ed for three hours as authorities secure scene. The fire itself was contained in the sec ondary boiler room behind Belk Dining Hall by the Raleigh Fire Department who arrived on the scene eight minutes after smoke was first reported. Student evacuation began before 3:40 a.m. Students students with children, how to improve lighting on campus, how to solve requests for more computers, how to obtain a new CAMCARD or develop one with more info for use as an ID, how to provide less fattening foods and longer hours of their avail ability in the Belk Dining Hall, and how to reduce speeding on campus. Dean Cannon made comments See FORUM page3 remained in Jones until approxi mately 6:00am. “Students were evacuated due to a possibility of smoke seeping into the residence halls through the tunnels,” said Campus Police Chief Mike Hoke. “Students were returned to residence halls as quickly as the residence halls were deemed habitable.” According to Marketing and Communications Director Jeanoie Morelock, WRAL-TV was notified by a student that the fire alarms in Vann did not go off. As Morelock explained to the station’s reporter, special cir cumstances in Vann necessitated special evacuation procediu-es. TTie station dropped the story. “The decision was made not to pull the alarms in Vann,” said Morelock. “It was far apart enough in proximity from the fire that its residents were not at immediate risk. Leslie Maxv^tell Sian Repoder Last week, students and staff had the opportunity to learn about psychology and related subjects during Psychology Week, sponsored by the Psychology Club. Sessions were held each night except Wednesday. These sessions were designed to help students learn more about psychology and related areas. On Monday and Tuesday in the Cate Center, a successful bake sale was held. Monday evening, psychology professor Dr. David Heining-Boynton pre sented a session on relation ships, including family relation ships, friendships, and romantic relationships. Graduate students in psychol ogy from ECU llj a discussion about getting into graduate school. Similarly, Meredith graduates from 1991 and 1995 with degrees in psychology dis cussed possible careers for psy chology majors who haven’t attended graduate school on Thursday night. Friday evening was the cli max of the week. At 6 pm. a din ner was held in Dogwood Suite in Belk Dining Hall. This dinner gave students and professors to get to know one another as indi viduals. Dr. Marie Mason received the alumna award at tJie dinner. Dr. Lyn Aubrecht, psychology professor, enjoyed the week because it “gave some individu als a chance to identify with psy chology as more than simply taking classes.” He also said that he thought there was a good variety of students present, and that these students benefited whether they had specific inter ests in psychology or just want ed to get a general overview of psychology.
