February 25,1998 Meredith Herald Campus Extras Do you need a campus number? Go Fish! Lisa Giluam Siall Reporter You always call her. You always forget a phone number, can't find one, or are too lazy to look it up in the CamTel, so who exactly is the person that helps you in a flash? That woman who is the key and link to all ofHces, teachers, and students from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. every day at Meredith College is none other than Phyllis Fish, the switchboard operator. Hsh has been here for the last three years and seems to adore what she does. She said that operating the switchboard “has to be the neatest job that’s just pleasant everyday.” With Valentine's Day just behind us, Fish has experienced one of her Phyllis Fish, switchboard operator, is there to guide all of the Meredith com munity through the telecommunication lines and receive their deliveries. Photo m Alyson Flood favorite times of the year. ‘'Valentine's is a knock out with all the flowers and candy,” she said, noting it is really fun to see ali the people so happy. Fish worked at a Qievrolet dealership as a receptionist before coining to Meredith, so she has always worked around the public and phones. She decided to try for a job at Meredith after bearing about a job opening through her daugh ter, Michelle, who graduated from Meredith in 1993. Fish fell in love with the col lege while her daughter was here because she thought Meredith was “such a great school" and made her daughter's stay so pleasant that she thought she would love to work here. Fish went for an interview and got the job that she now loves so much. Fish is a Raleigh native who now lives in Cary and in her spare lime likes to watch old movies, especially Cone With the Wind, and woiic in the yard. Fish has been manied to Billy Fish for thirty-three years and also has a son named Michael, who is an NC Slate graduate. Fish said that her daughter, Michelle, carried on the angel theme from Meredith when her last name became Angel after she married. Fish and her husband enjoy going to the movies, to tlie beach, and out to eat. Fish calls going to the beach their “all time favorite thing.’' Fish also has another very important pal in her life, and that is her “really neat litUe affection ate dog,” Molly. Molly is a WesUe that lives with the Fishes indoors and is “very close” to PhylUs. The part of Fish’s job that she enjoys the most is dealing with the students, who she said are all so “polite, sweet, and special.” She said that anytime they ask for phone numbers, “it is always followed by a thank you.” The busiest part of her job is during times of bad weather like Hurricane Fran. The switchboard “lights up like a Christmas tree,” she said. Fish has two favorite students that have helped her out a lot— Christal Webber and Frankie Epps. Webber now works at the campus child care center, but Epps still works when Fish lakes her lunch break. Fish said that Webber still comes back to help her some times during Mtrcb 16-20 lOiWaJt.-12:MNoo« 2:00pA-5:60p.B. AJI chingc$ will be made during (be week of March 16*20 in tb« Rctidencc UfeOfficc. They’ve both been and still are “help* ful and best friends.” Now that Fish’s son and daughter have moved out of tbe house, she says that Epps and Webber are “like fami ly.” All in all, Fish thinks Meredith is “a great school.” Basketball wins again Jill Green Slalt Reporter ' Meredith continued its winning ways with victories over Bennett College on Feb. 18 and North Carolina Wesleyan on Feb. 21 bringing their record to 19-2 for the season. In action last Wednesday night, the Angels easily handled an outmatched Bennett team by beating them 83-47. From the tip*off, Meredith was in control of tbe ball and the score. In fact, the best part of the game came early in the first half when Bennett’s coach was thrown out for harassing the referees with shouts including, “Go on and give me a technical [foul]!” Her ejection brought the crowd to a roar. Saturday's game, the final home game of the season and “Senior Day,” was a 63- 43 win for the Angels. Sophomore Beth Goodale had 15 points and 15 rebounds. Junior Aedrin Muiray added 15 points, and Junior Wendy Cooper scored 11 points. Meredith closes out its season this weekend in Greensboro in the tournament.
