If you bave, you are invit ed to present it in Meredith’s first ever undergraduate research con ference. The conference, orga nized by Beth Mulvaney of the art department is intended to showcase the work of Meredith students. Students from ail disciplines are encouraged to present a paper they have written on any topic. The presentation is read ing the paper, and the time allot ted for tte presentation is IS minutes-about an eight page paper. The papers can range from a student’s thesis to just a provocative paper. Sponsored by the Creative Ideas Fund, the conference was inspired by Mulvaney’s an stu- dews. They expressed an interest in the conferences that Mulvaney's attends in her career. “One of the things I want to accomplish is a greater level of confidence for students,” said Mulvaney. To encourage students to pre sent their works, cash prizes will be awarded to the top three papers from Meredith College. In addition to possible cash rewards, students will have the opportunity to be part of a large academic forum, demonstrate academic pride and to get a feel for what is happening among the different departments at Meredith. Presenting a paper is also is a fabulous addition to a resume. The forum is designed to ben efit Meredith students, but stu dents from campuses around the triangle are invited to particiap- ate in the conference. This will allow MereUth to see what other schools are doing and bow Meredith stacks up against them.^ “It’s a level playing field; it’s our job to pu^ you [Meredith students] out there.” said Mulvaney. Parents and audience are wel come. According to Mulvaney, (he more people who see the academic side of Meredith, (he better. Mulvaney auends several conferences like this a year and enjoys them immensely. She is hoping to make to the confer ence the annual event. Interested students should submit a one-page absuact. which consists of the thesis of the paper and some of the subtopics, to Professor Beth Mulvaney of the art department by March 17.1998. All students, faculty and staff are encouraged to participate in the conference April 25. 1998 at Meredith College.
