February 3,1999 Meredith Herald Campus News College announces newest donated gifts Press Release Ofnce of Marketlrtg & Communlcattons Murphy Osbome, vice presi dent for institutional advance ment. has announced the fol lowing significant gifts given to the College; Louise Vann Tronnes of Winston-Salem established the John Graves Vann and Mary Norwood Vann, ‘18, Scholar ship in honor of her father and mother, The scholarship, endowed with a gift of $10,000, will provide financial assistance to a student studying environmental sciences. The Meredith Always Endowment Fund has been established by Laura Weather- spoon Harrill, ‘27. Harrill is a member of the Thomas Mered ith Society and Heritage Soci ety. and she is a past president of the Alumnae Association and former class agent. The endowment is earmarked for renov^ions and campus beau tification. The James R. Johnson Memorial Prize has been estab lished through funds from many donors in memory of James R. Johnson, IIL Johnson was a business and economics professOT at Meredith for many years. The prize will be award ed to a student who has proven herself worthy of reward by her performance both in and out of the classroom. Johnson's spouse and select members of the Department of Business and Economics faculty will select the recipient. The Goodwin-Loftin First Family Scholarship has been established by Bill and Dot Loftin Goodwin, '47, to honor the memory of Dr. and Mrs. O. S. Goodwin and Sallie Beal Loftin. '21. The scholarship, initiated with a gift of more than $25,000, also honors Dorothy Loftin Goodwin, ‘47, Claire E. Goodwin, ‘73, and Susan Goodwin Thornbrough, ‘76, to perpetuate their interest in providing love, friendship and support for Meredith Col lege. Dot Goodwin has been a member of the Meredith Board of Trustees, Heritage Society and Board of Associates as Design students win again Kbjsty Pierce, Ellen Goode American Society for Inierior Designers The Interior Design Depart ment went to Greensboro this past weekend for the Central Carolina’s American Society of Interior Designers (CCASID) winter conference for students. The conference was held at UNC-G Friday and Staturday Jan. 29-30, 1999. For the third year in a row, Meredith College received four out of five of the Otto Zenke Design Competition awards. The students com pleted the designs during their Interior Design III class held during the Fall ‘98 semester taught by Suzie Andron. The following awards were presented to Meredith stu dents; Elaine Karcher - Hon. Mention Vicky Lynn - 3rd, $250 Christie Harderson - 2nd, $500 Jenny McWilliam.s - 1st, $750 Meredith College also won $750 for having McWilliams receive the first place award. All students received recogni tion plaques. In the Edible Chair compe tition, the College’s IDDe- partment had three winning entries: Vicky Lynn and Willie Green-Aldridge won for hav ing the Most Edible Chair; Karen Wells, Melissa Proctor and Karin Syne won Best Stu dent Entry for their chair; andMelissa Carter, Michell Kann and Kristy Pierce won Best Overall. All chairs were between six inches and 24 inches tall while each chair was con structed completely out of edible food products. The team’s faculty adviso- er. Dr. Ellen Goode, said, “We’re so proud of these stu dents and the quality of their work was excellent." well as the curator of the Meredith Doll Collection. The Meredith Autism fto- gram Endowment has been ini tialed with a contribution of $15,000 from family, friends, corporations and parents in order to enhance the Autism Program at Meredith. “The establishment and growth of the Meredith Autism Program is a wonderful example of the humanities element of Mered ith’s mission." said Osborne. The Judge Edwin S. Preston, Jr. and Dr. Dorothy K. Preston Scholarship in Statistics has been established with a gift of $10,000 by Dorothy Knott Pre ston, ‘54. of Raleigh. Preston was a professor of mathematics at Meredith from 1961 until her retirement in 1997. The Pre ston Scholarship in Statistics will be awarded annually to a rising junior or senior who has exhibited outstanding work in statistics. The Presidential Scholar ship, an award funded by a one-time grant from an anony mous donor, will provide a full scholarship to two freshmen entering Meredith College in the fall of 1999. The two recipients can renew the awards, worth $12,500 per year, annually for four years. Selection for this scholarship will be based entirely on merit of superior academic achievement, intellectual promise and leadership abili- ty- The Alumnae Scholarship Fund has been initiated by individual alumnae associa tion members who are inter ested in providing financial assistance to students who exemplify outstanding achievements and who are deemed exceptional students. The alumnae committee rais ing money for the scholarship fund hopes to reach its goal of $1 million lo provide four full scholarships by the end of 2000. “When this scholarship is fully endowed, it will be one of the most prestigious and coveted at Meredith Col lege," said Osborne. Housing info coming soon Lisa Wn.EY Office of Residence Life The 1999-2000 Housing Sign-Up day that was sched uled for Feb. 24, 1999 has been changed to Mar. 16, 1999 in Jones Auditorium. Housing informarion will be put in your mailbox the week of Feb, 15. 1999. Special Health Requests: Students with health condi tions requiring special con sideration must have written confirmation from a physi cian documenting this need. This written confirmation is required each year and should be into Residence Life by Feb. 26 at 5 p.m. Failure to bring in written confirmation will inhibit your chances to be housed in an area that best suits your health needs. You may request a particular residence hall, but not a specific room or floor. The Director of Res idence Life will make hous ing assignments for health conditions. Housing Lottery; The lottery will be held for pri vate rooms, non-suite rooms, 4th Barefoot, 4th Brewer and 3-person rooms on Wed., Mar. 3 at 6 p.m. in Kresge Aud. Students who do not receive a room through the lottery will need to participate in the housing sign-up on Mar. 16. ■lunlors/Seniors Only; Applications for off-cam pus housing will be avail able in the Office of Resi dence Life Feb. 22,1999. In order to live off-campus, you must have a 2.0 GPA and have acquired 60 hours and/or lived four semesters in the residence halls.
