Meredith Herald February 10,1999 Campus News Possible ‘Professor’ Greene sighting Lrsue Maxwell Police Reporter If you see a suspicious per son on Meredith’s campus, do you know what to do? You’re right if you say report it immediately to Meredith’s Campus Police. But some stu dents on campus don't. And that bothers Campus Police Chief Mike Hoke. He said it was “frustrat ing” to hear stu dents talk about someone (hey saw more than 24 hours ago. One person in particular who the Police are on the lookout for is Robert Hunter Greene, a man who has been responsible for breaking and entering and trespassing on area campuses including Puke, UNC-CH and NC State, He usually claims to be a faculty member and travels by bicycle. At Meredith, he has said that he is an adjunct professor in the physics department. The first time he appeared on Meredith’s campus, the police gave him a trespass Robert Hunter Greene • 5’7" tall; 150 lbs. 55 yrs. • grey hair; olive complexion • well-groomed; wears LL Bean type clothing. • usually wears sunglasses outdoors. • rides black mountain bike w/light blue lettering on frame • carries at least one nylon/cordura briefcase. • attempts to blend in as staff/faculty member; names possible campus acquaintances, (adjunct physics professor). • never been charged with a violent crime, but has been arrested by regional universities for trespassing and breaking and entering. warning. However, if he is seen and caught on the campus again, he can be arrested for second degree trespass, a mis demeanor. The first sightings of Greene were in 1997. However, in the past few weeks, Hoke has received two reported sightings of Greene. The reported sight ings occurred in the afternoon around 3 or 4 p.m. “I am reasonably sure that the man people are seeing is a new male staff member that they don’t recognize,” Hoke said. But. he noted, “I’m being very cautious.” He has sent Greene’s profile and updated pic ture to all faculty and staff so that they can recognize him. Office thieves “thrive on the inherent openness of colleges and churches,” he said. Therefore Hoke stresses that it is important for students to notify campus police immediately if they see a suspicious person on campus. When a sighting is reported, the police can go to the last place the person has been seen. Ten mem bers of the club traveled to Camp Mundo Vista, near Ashe- boro, to help with camp renova tions. Along with painting and cleaning out the camp’s build ings, members came together for fellowship, where they sang. MCA also holds two other retreats for members—one in the fall and one in the spring- with the Baptist Union. Senior Rachel Bennett, MCA president, defined the goal of MCA as being an “outreach to the Meredith comtnunity and to the outside community.” With the help of adviser Sam Carothers, the campus minister, and Joi Williams, assistant campus minister, MCA leaves a lasting impression on the stu dents involved. “It was really neat to know that the work we did will later help campers become closer to Christ,” said Bennett. Tlie members spent all day Saturday helping clean out cab ins and repainting the worn walls. This is a way for the stu dents to outreach not only in the surrounding communities, but also across the state. MCA also works with other schools for outreach programs. Remember to thank Phyllis Flsh for your Valentine’s Day flowers if you receive them through the switchboard!
