Meredith Herald March 3,1999 Campus News Campus aids students in declaration Amy Erbrznik Staff Reporter The first and sophomore years are important in many ways, including declaring a major. Last Wednesday, Meredith held ils 6lh annual Majors Fair. For two hours, students had the chance to learn about the various majors offered at Merediih. Profes sors, as well as current students and alumnae from each major, were preseni to answer ques tions from students. The fair was held on the Stringfield side of Belk Dining Hall. Refreshments were offered to the students and fac ulty. Each department se( up a table, or “station," where departments presented infor mation about their major. Students could receive infor mation sheets about a specillc major and ask questions. Each department presented current statistics on career availability and demand and what jobs one might have with that major. Some students came to learn about several majors they were interested in, while others came to declare their major on the spot with the Office of the Registrar representatives. If students were unclear about where to go with their course studies, Ann Gleason and Faithe Hart from the Office of Academic Advising were on hand to aid any students seek ing advice. Sophomore Christy Sears thought the fair was helpful, saying she “found the fair to be a simple and logical way to declare my major." To add to the fun, students signed up for door prizes, which included items from the student store and various loca tions from around the Triangle. Junior Erin Grant won the gift certificate to the Angus Barn off Highway 70. Summing up the event, Mary Beck Sutton, assistant director of the Career Center, said she was “very pleased with the interest and enthusi asm at the fair “ The students "seemed very happy with the opportunity to declare their major after the effort they had already invest ed," said Sutton. Faculty challenge team Bt-TH 1 lALL News Editor Meredith is a notoriously pohte college where students and faculty always work in harmony toward mutual goals, right? Well, not always. Last Wednesday, Meredith faculty, brightly attired in rainbow tie-dyed team T-shirts, filed into the Weather- spoon Gym to take on the Angels bas ketball team. The faculty team. The Relics, stood undaunted as they faccd the intimidating Angels, who were just returning from their tournament win the previous weekend (their regu lar season record is 19-2). Unfortunately, their age and wis dom did not work to their advantage. The Angels beat them 35 to 26. “Con sidering our age and varying stages of decay, I think we did well in avoiding injury," said history professor Michael Novak. “At least we came in second.” Chuck Taylor, executive vice presi dent, also commended his team. “Although we lost, we did show some flashes of brilliance," he said. Whilc none of the Angels inter viewed after the game commented on The Relics “brilliance," several agreed that “they were cute.” “It’s good to see this side of them," said Angel Leslie Roberts. If having fun was the object of the game instead of gaining points, both teams, as well as the audience, left the gym as winners.
