Meredith Heraid April 14,1999 12 Campus Extras Bare Naked Ladies performs in Triangle Leslie Maxwell Police Reponer “If I Had $1,000,000," I’d follow the Barenaked Ladies around the country. After their concert on Apr. 8. the first time I saw them in concert. I have no doubi that 1 would become a groupie. ‘Unless you’ve been out of the country, under a rock or holed up in your room, you know that G105 had 17,000 tickets to give away, a task they did in various ways. In fact, it was hard to walk across campus or go to class last week without hearing somebody mention Thurs day’s concert. The gates to ALLTEL Walnut Creek Pavilion opened at 5 p.m., but many arrived earlier to tailgate. We got there around 6 p.m.. and as we walked through the parking lot the smell of cooking out greeted us. Our tickets were lawn seats, which suited me— more room to dance! Dag opened a little after 7 p.m. I enjoyed them, but I was too busy trying to find people I knew and too anx ious to hear BNL to listen closely to them. They per formed their song ‘'Our Love Would Be Much Bet ter,” which most people did know. Around 8, the band Everything (of “The Hooch” fame) began their show. One song I really enjoyed was called “Lady- bug.” However. I missed their best known song when I was off the lawn. Finally, around 9:30, the moment I had anticipated for a couple of months arrived; the Barenaked Ladies took the stage. They opened with “It’s All Been Done,” a single off their latest album. Stunt. Playing songs from earlier albums as well as newer ones, BNL played songs that would please old. die hard fans and new, radio based fans. They played “Alcohol,” their newest radio release, and “Never is Enough.” an track not yet a radio single, which are my two favorite songs off Stunt-- The crowd sang along as the band played “Jane" and "If I Had $1,000,000,” with the lyric “If I had $1000000, / I’d buy you a fur coat / But not a real fur coat that’s cruel.” Toward the end of the show, they played "One Week," the song that most people know. For those unfamiliar with BNL, they are fun, random and creative. They ended the set with a mix of sam ples of current pop songs, including “Gettin’Jiggy Wit It," "Pretty Fly (For a White Guy)", "My Heart Will Go On” and lots of others. I love the way they can make fun of other songs without being too obvious and without making anyone mad. And you’d never know how fly this Canadian group is until you see them in con cert. Meeting the demands of the crowd, they played "If I Fall" for their first encore. But we couldn’t get enough, so they played “Brian Wil son” as the second encore, ending around 11 p.m. I love the Barenaked Ladies even more after see ing them in concert, and I plan to go see them either when when they come to Charlotte or Raleigh again this summer. (I may even go to both.) I think even people who went just because they got free tickets had a good time. A guy near me told me that he had a lot of fun, and he knew only a few songs. The Barenaked Ladies put on a great show without all the laser lights and fireworks that other bands need to have a great show. The next day, Friday, my throat hurt from yelling and singing, and my legs hurt from dancing. But that was nothing compared to seeing one of my favorite bands live.
