August 25,1999 Meredith Herald Campus Opinion Editor Expect expectations Welcome back lo Meredith for reluming students and welcome to Meredith for new students. This new school year, like the s(art of every school year, brings with it many changes: new professors, new classes, new books, new rooms and, this year, a new president. The editor of the Herald has also ^•1 * changed, and I know you will have expec tations that you want me to fulfill. However, I have some expectations for you, too. I want you to tell me what your expectations are. I will try my best to meet your needs and wants. I want to inspire you, and I want to make you mad. Agree with me or disagree with me—either way, let me know. I want to hear your thoughts on issues, whether those issues are campus-related or local or national or international. I want to instigate discussions, provoke thought and create com munity. Most of all, I want you to make this your newspaper. This is the student newspaper of Meredith College, and it cannot happen without you. Your letters, calls, comments, submissions—they keep the campus lively and the paper intriguing. Your opinions can make changes on campus. Don’t wait for sonwone else to take the initiative to make changes. It won’t hap pen. If we all had the mentality of waiting for someone else, noth ing would ever be accomplished, no changes would ever be made We would all think alike, talk alike, dress alike, have the same opinions—because we would be trapped in our mindseLs. Don’t let yourself get trapped. Instead, take action against things that have the potential to trap you. Apathy, which is what happens when you let yourself become trapped, is also what happens on this campus when you don’t write or share you opinions. Tell me your news, tell me your opinions. Tell me what you like and what you don’t like. You have the power to mold the newspa per. A student newspaper cannot fulfill its obligation without the students. Help me fulfill the obligation of this newspaper and my obligation as its editor.
