September 1,1999 Meretlith Herald Campus Extras HARTFORD continued from page 1 ment as long as the individual is received with respect. She believes that campus-wide meetings would be a good beginning for this. Forming a just community, Hartford noted, will be the most challenging step. Meredith must be will ing to reach out and adapt to changes. Dr. Hartford plans to place added emphasis on Study Abroad, missions and exchange programs in order to advance this pan of her plan for “Moving to We." Discipline, based on honor and integrity rooted in Judeo-Christian beliefs is already expected in this community, but Dr. Hartford urged all related to Meredith to take time to reflect on what the Honor Code means. During her presidency. Dr. Hartford hopes to cultivate a sense of caring not only within the college gates but thoughout Raleigh. “In a real community, people support and encourage each other,” she said. She said that she wants to place more focus on volunleer efforts, and that she hopes that we as indi viduals will feel the need to reach out through leadership and volunteerism. The final item in Dr. Hartford’s plan is to encourage us to celebrate what Meredith College is known for—tradition. She wants to ensure that our traditions endure, while at the same time making sure that they change enough to accommodate the 21st century. Together, believes Hartford, we can work on this one action and interaction at a time. Dr Hartford concluded the opening convocation of the 100th academic year by reading an email that she received about the qualities of a good friend and how the expected qualities change throughout the years. She urged the entire Meredith community to find and be such a friend, and said that by doing so, everyone could be sure that they were “Moving to We.” The convocation was so attended by students that many students went to Jones Chapel to hear the speech. Other Students like junior Christian Melvin watched the convocation on MCTV in their rooms. Faculty, for the opening convocation, wore their academic regalia-hoods, which signify Master’s Degrees and stripes on the sleeves of their robes, which signify doctorates. Tonight, Sept. 1 and Thursday nigh, Sept. 2, Dr. Hartford will stay in 208 Poteat, as the Herald reported last week. Students are asked to visit and share their concerns with her.
