Meredith Herald September 15,1999 Campus News Dean of Students Gleason advises, counsels Rebecca Johnson staff Writer One of the changes that has come with a new school year is Meredith’s new Dean of Stu dents. Ann Gleason. Gleason has been with Meredith since July of 1997 when she became Director of Academic Advising. Gleason said that this change in position has been challeng ing but positive. Gleason grew up in Illinois where she attended Quincy University and graduated with a double major in psychology and sociology. For her post-graduate stud ies she attended Auburn Uni versity in Alabama. There she received her graduate degrees in education and counseling. While attending Auburn, Gleason became very interest ed in the development of col lege students and began explor ing this interest as a possible career. There, she worked as a Resident Director and with ori entation and admissions to get Hurricane Floyd ready to strike NC Lesue Maxwell Editor lr\ ctilel Hurricane Floyd, as of 10 p.m. Tuesday evening, was projected to hit the east coast of Florida Wednesday morning, according to the weather.com. By Wednesday evening, Floyd is predicted to be in the Savannah area of southeast Georgia. By Thursday morning, Floyd will probably be hitting the south east comer of North Carolina and the southern Piedmont around Charlotte. Around 5 p.m. Tuesday evening, Floyd struck the Bahamas with sustained winds of over 115 mph. Brandi Orbin, assistant director of communications at Meredith, said that the Incident Management Group met Tuesday afternoon. Orbin said that the Residence Life staff has battery-operated radios and flashlights should the power fail. Orbin also said that Belk Din ing Hall is prepared to serve food on a small scale if a power failure occurs. “The college is constantly mon itoring the situation,” said Orbin. a good idea of how a college helps its students to develop. In order to gain experience off the college campus, Glea son’s next move was to Dallas, Tex., where she did non-profit work as an HIV Counselor and served as head of a senior citi zens volunteer program. However, she once again found herself involved in col lege life by becoming a Health Professions Adviser at the Uni versity of Texas at Austin, and later she became coordinator of the Health Professions Advis ing Program at the University of Florida in Gainesville. Gleason’s husband, Gary, then her fiancec, was working at UNC-Chapel Hill’s library, and she began searching for a career opening that would bring them together. Gleason applied for the position as the Director of Academic Advising at Meredith in the spring of 1997 and was hired in that summer. Gleason served as the Direc tor of Academic Advising until assuming her new position last May Gleason currently lives in Durham with her husband and says she is thrilled about her new position at Meredith. As Dean of Students, Glea son advises the Honor Council and acts as a support system for all students at Meredith. She says that her transition between jobs has been really exciting, because, even though she is in a new position, she still gets to work with many of the same people as before. Gleason not only supports students, but faculty as well. She serves as a support for the offices of Residence Life, Commuter Life and Special Services, and the office of First Year Experience. Gleason serves as a support for all of these resources and makes sure that when a student needs help there will always be someone to help them. Her advice to freshmen or anyone who feels over- whelnted by college is to notice what Meredith has to offer and then to choose what you are most interested in by getting involved. Gleason said, ‘There is no better time than now to be at Meredith. We are on the verge of a new millennium, and for the first time we have a woman President.
