The theme of this year’s week, from Monday, Oct. 25 through Thursday, Oct. 28. was “Self Over Substance.” The goals of (he week, said its planners, were to make stu dents aware of the dangers of drinking and to educate stu dents on the effects of alcohol on a person. Events throughout the past week gave students the oppor tunity to see the damages caused by drinking, said plan ners- These events tried to stress the importance of being responsible while having a good time. The events were sponsored by the Self Over Substance committee and part ly by the Student Government Association, Meredith Enter tainment Association and the Honor Council. Monday, the SOS committee brought a wrecked car to cam pus. They placed the car behind the Alumnae House so that most students could see it. When it was brought to cam pus, students could hear the story behind the car and know that it was Involved in an alco hol-related accident. Tuesday, members of the SOS committee, including Heilman and Barefoot Resi dence Director Kelly Conkling and SGA president Jennifer Ricks, helped students wearing “beer goggles” walk a straight line and catch a ball. The course was set up in Belk Din ing Hall at dinnertime. Stephanie Harris, director of commuter life and special ser vices and an organizer of the week’s events, said that she felt that the obstacle course let stu dents experience the disadvan tages of being drunk first hand with the beer goggles. On Wednesday, the chapel service was dedicated to Alco hol Awareness Week featuring the editor of the Biblical Recorder as the speaker. The Mocktail party on Thursday of last week proved to students that alcohol is not an necessary ingredient in hav ing fun. Students came dressed in their Halloween costumes for a fun time in the Cate Cen ter. They had non-alcoholic drinks and socialized with friends. Conkling felt that the “over all attendance was great.” Hopefully, she said, students put the dangers of alcohol into perspective and will make the choice to be responsible.
