November 17,1999 Meredith Herald Campus Extras Meredith women learn about issues Abby Spencer Slaff Writer The Sophie Lanneau Lead ership Program is just one of the opportunities thal Meredith students have to fine tune their leadership skills. This leadership program deals with reading and writing about per sonal lead ership and going to leadership confer- ences. The program has three levels: the Foundation of leadership. Sil ver Leaf and Gold Leaf. When a student reaches the Gold Leaf level, she has to do a communi ty project. Senior Michelle Drake, who is in the third level, chosc Women’s Health Issues Day as her project. Drake said that she felt it was neccessary “because of the environment we are in." On Monday, Nov. 15, the Women’s Health Fair had seven vendors participating. All of the vendors had their on booth set up with information about their organization. The vendors included the Raleigh Police Department, which was promoting public safety. Interact, a woman’s crisis and counseling center, had a booth on domestic violence and sexual assault. If a student wanted informa tion on pain and massage ther apy, she could have visited the Soft Tissue Therapy booth. For depression, drug abuse, stress, or suicidal thoughts, stu dents could visit the-Holly Hill / Charter booth. Their booth had information on how to tell if someone needs psychiatric help. Keep in mind they have free 24-hour assessment, so they can always be reached at l-80()-CHARTEiR. Rex Health Care was also there, providing information on breast cancer and how to pre vent it. If a student wanted to quit smoking, then the Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies booth was the one to visit. Also, keep an eye in the stu dent activities center for class es to help you quit smoking. Of course, no Meredith Col lege health fair would be com plete without the Meredith Health Center and Counseling Center. They had information on everything from illnesses to stress to depression. If a student did not make it out to the health fair, Drake said, then she can call the Meredith College Health or Counseling Centers with any questions or concerns.
