Opinion: Driving is a no-good task
Tanesha Williams
staff Writer
I hale driving. And I am
almost positive thai the vast
majority of you would agree
with me on that statement.
Traffic, the high cost of gas
and inane drivers who end up
driving you crazy are only (he
start of my complaints. All
these things are enough to
make even the shortest com
mute seem like an eternity.
No matter where I go, I can
not escape it. A friend once
said that she thought people
were tapping into her phone
conversations and listening to
them to see what time she was
leaving just so that they could
go out and cause traffic prob
lems for her.
While I find that a little far
fetched. 1 still don’t understand
why there is so much traffic in
Raleigh. The traffic gurus arc
constantly trying to solve the
problem by putting up new
roads, highways, byways and
interstates. All this construc
tion. however, produces what
seems to be just more traffic.
I often wonder what is going
on in the minds of my fellow
commuters.
The gawkers especially irri
tate me, for I still do not under
stand what is so interesting
about an accident on the other
side of 1-40 that would make a
person brake to the point of
stopping, looking and (hen
Circle K inducts
new members
Amanda Fletchkr
Staff Writer
The Meredith College chap
ter of Circle K inducted its new
members and officers on Tues
day. Nov. 16. The club met in
the Oak Room in Belk Dining
Hall for the ceremony. They
enjoyed eating and talking
together while the ceremony
took place.
Steve Henion, president of
the Highwoods Kiwanis, was
the speaker. He challenged the
club members to “stick with
this [the club] and get the most
out of it. Go past what is
required and help provide for
others."
Circle K’s mission is to
“involve collegc and university
students in campus and commu
nity service while developing
quality leaders and citizens.”
The 46 new members of the
club promised to uphold the
ideals of the club during a can
dle light pin ceremony.
Each inductee was presented
with a Circle K membership pin
and choose to recited a mem
bership pledge.
This year’s officers are Mary
Frances Vassaur, president;
Julie Anna Dimcock, vice pres
ident; Jessica Landon, secre
tary; and Ashley Flatt. treasurer.
The evening was brought to a
close with Boyd Dimmock. the
club's adviser, asking the group
to “do good all the time.”
Ben Detwiler hoped to make the world a better place.
That hope died when he was killed by a drunk driver.
WItat should you do to slop a friend from driving drunk?
WfiaMv«ryou have to.

o
finally proceeding.
This cause and effect on the
road drives me crazy because
when a person slows down on
the interstate, he causes the
traffic behind him to build up,.
This build up, in turn, creates
minor to major delays for all
who are driving in that vicini-
ty-
In addition, the cost of dri
ving is also absolutely ridicu
lous. Around this time last year
I can recall the 89-octane gaso
line costing around $.85 per
gallon.
Not anymore. Now it costs
about $ 1.25 for the cheap stuff.
My average weekly cost of dri
ving is now up to $30.1 see no
reason for gas to cost ihis
much.
These days, driving pretty
much stinks, Between the out
rageous prices of gas. the herds
of traffic and other drivers who
don’t think. I cannot stand to be
behind the wheel.
