Meredith Herafd February 2, 2000 2 Campus News Students are eager to catch a glimpse of Alice Harmony Strong Siaft Whler The only Ihing that many students have been talking about, besides the weather, is Alice. They’ve all heard about her, but none have actually seen her—until now, that is. The faculty and staff of Meredith have been working hard putting together their ver sion of l-ewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland. They have prac ticed secretly, practiced in bad weather and practiced late into the night and early into the morning. This week, on Thursday, Feb. 3 and Friday, Feb. 4, stu dents will finally see the long- aniicipated production. Every four years the Mered ith community can see its pro fessors and admini.stration in a new way. Each cast member will be adorned in elaborate costumes including rabbit ears, big hats, royal gowns and other “non sense.” They will be dressed as cards, mice, rabbits, turtles, birds, queen.s, knights and of course, as one very curious lit tle girl. Freshman Melody Strong said, “I think it will be funny to see our teachers dressed up in costumes." From Alice to the Mad Hat ter to the Cheshire Cat, all parts will be per formed by the men and women who impart their knowledge to Meredith stu dents everyday. Now these professors will act “mad” for the enjoyment of (heir students. Although this production is taken from the children’s classics Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through ihe Looking Glass, the faculty and staff have added their own quirks here and there to make it more personalized for the Meredith community. Don’t expect the Disney ver sion because that’s not what is in store. Sophomore Wendy Whitt said, “It will be a good chance to see our professors in a dif ferent light.” In the spirit of excitement about this upcoming produc tion, Belk Dining Hall will have a drawing on Feb. 3 for an autographed book of Alice in Wonderland or a SCI of Alice in Wonderland beanbag toys. This prize is a chance for a student to have a keepsake from an event that only happens once every four years at Meredith. If a student did not order a copy of the book from Mered ith Entertainment Association, she can find a copy of the well- known book at any number of bookstores including Quail Ridge Bookstore in Ridge wood Shopping Center behind Meredith. She can then have her book autographed after either perfor mance at the tea party in Johnson Hall Rotunda. Other features on campus include several displays, bulletin boards and fliers. In the library, two glass cases filled with Alice in Wonderland memorabelia are on display. Alice in Wonderland will be performed in Jones Auditorium at 8 p.m. on both Thursday and F-'riday nights. With so many .students planning on coming to see the production, those in charge of the production advise students that it is best to arrive early to get a seat. The doors open at 7 p.m.. so Whitt says .she plans on being at the doors of Jones auditori um “as close to 7” as she can. She thinks the line to get in will be long, and she wants to be able to gel a seal up close. Though there wilt be over flow sealing in Jones Chapel, students who sit there will not receive the full effect of the performance. Students should come to only one production, advised Vice President for Student Development Jean Jackson, director of Alice in Wonder land. so that everyone will find a seal. After four years of wailing for Alice to come back around, the Meredith community is now going to be entertained once again by the talents of the faculty and staff. Come prepared for a night of enjoyment as new characters cross the stage of Jones Audito rium with their costumes and quick-witted dialogue. “I think it will be funny to see our teachers dressed up in costumes.” "Melody Strong, freshman *44 seat-5 "for *20 155 seats Get great seats at a really great price.
