Leesha Austin; Siaff Wrilerr Meredith College's long- anticipaied production of Alice in Wonderland, performed Thursday. Feb. 3. and Friday. Feb. 4. was received with delighted appreciation from Meredith students. The performances were put on entirely by the faculty and staff on campus. Faculty and staff, keeping their parts, iheir jokes and their costumes secret from inquiring students, made sure that the play surprised all. From the time people began lining up outside of Jones Auditorium until the show began, there was an atmos phere of excitement as students prepared lo see the twentieth production of Alice in Wonder land. From beginning Jo end, Alice was full of surprises and kept the audience laughing. The Maureens made anoth er appearance (from Corn- huskin’) as a lobster, the Caterpillar, the Do Do, and a card, singing about “walkin’ in an Alice Wonderland.” Director Dr Jean Jackson, vice president for student development, introduced the production and advised the audience to "bring your books, bring your programs and see if you can find out who this cast really is." Some costumes, like the lobsters’, were quite elabo rate, and the references to aspects of life at Meredith, from memory lines to Ihe Belk Dining Hall produced more than a few laughs. The fairies on roilerblades evoked modern images of William Shakespeare’s A Mid summer Night's Dream. And Alice began quoting her Chaucer memory lines: “Whanne that April...," bring ing back memories of Mered ith’s famous course Major British Authors. The class of 2000 celebrated l(X3ih Nighi, marking 100 days until its graduation on May 14. Traditionally, seniors use the last two digits of their gradua tion year and begin counting down the days until they face the real world. The celebration usually Seniors serendae the class of 2002 ir^ the Johnson Hall Rotunda at 100th Night begins with a dinner and a party afterwards complete with music and dancing. There is a midnight serenade by their little sister class, the class of 2002. “Our lOOih night was made doubly special because the pro duction of Alice was on the same night.” said Susan Spencer, senior. "We understood that the performance could not be an event for us. but we thought it would be nice (o go see it as a class with our little sisters. It made our celebration a little more special for us than all the rest.” said Erin Grant, senior class president. But once the Rotunda had been cleared of cast members and eager students waiting for auto graphs. the seniors were ready to cut loose on the Karaoke machine and cut into the cake their little sisters provided. Senior April Bussells said, "The students who were in charge did an excellent job. It was a great time to just sit back and talk.” Cameron Talbert, who was one of the lOOlh Night co chairs said that they "did everything possible to make the night unforgettable, from cute t-shirts to notepads with 100 Meredith memories.” The seniors laughed and shared memories until mid- See 100th NIGHT page seven
