Meredith Herald March 1, 2000 8 Campus Extras Go mad over new video release Crazy in Alabama Alexia Andrews SiaW Wriier Newly released on video, Crazy in Alabama is a niusi- rent. Though ihis movie has been pul in ihe "year’s worst” category by People Magazine. most of the actual viewers have thoroughly loved the movie. Quotations from the film like "Riding in a hearse is the best, as long as you are riding up front" and “A real man knows the difference between justice and whai is just” make this movie a great one. Crazy iri Alabama is the directing debui of Antonio Banderas. Starring in the movie is his real-life wife. Melanie Griffith. She plays a woman who was both physically and mentally abused by her husband. The setting of the movie is in Alabama during Ihe Civil Rights movement. The movie begins with Grif fith’s character packing her bags to run from the authorities becau.se she has killed her hus band in order to follow her dreams of becoming an actress. Her eight children are forced to move in with their grandmoth er. The two cousins who already live with their grand mother must now move in with their uncle at his funeral home because their grandmother can not take care of them. One of these boys is B.J., and he is Griffith’s biggest fan. B.J. is also the center of con troversy for the film. As Grif fith’s character drives across the country, the police are breathing down B.J.'s neck to find her whereabouts. Mean while, she is having a great time traveling across the coun try with her dead husband’s head in a hatbox. Eventually, she does reach Hollywood and intermingles with the rich and famous. Meanwhile, back in Alabama, the Civil Rights of the 1960s is in full swing. In one instance, some black kids who were denied entrance into the “whites only" pool have started a sit in. The sheriff soon arrives, and kids start running everywhere. He pulls one of the children off the fence, and the boy fall to his death. The sheriff shouts. "He fell." but B.J. tells his uncle and the father of the dead boy w hat the sheriff did. At the same time, Griffith's character, who is supposed to be hiding from the authorities while making her acting debut, has made it on to one of the nation's new and most popular television shows and has final ly decided to ditch her hu.s- band’s head over the Golden Gate Bridge. Two policemen see her and think she is trying to commit suicide- While Melanie is try ing to explain to them that she is not. her gambling money spills out and Ihe police offi cers realize who she is. Then, she is sent lo a jail in Alabama to await trial. She is back just in time for the court case against the sheriff in which B.J. is the main witness. Please congratulate these freshmen for their outstanding achievement in becoming members of Alpha Lambda Delta!
