With a theme of “Our Favorites,” the 14 members of Meredith's synchronized swimming team performed to their favorite songs and groups including the Friends' theme song, the Dixie Chicks’ “Ready to Run," U2's “Myste rious Ways” and Madonna’s “Into the Grove.” Some team members performed a routine to Disney favorites such as “One Jump Ahead” from Aladdin and “Hakuna Matata” from The Lion King. One favorite number among both the audience and the team was entitled “Sisterhood,” which celebrated the friendship between the team members. The piece included such songs as “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” “Uptown Girls” and “My Girl." Sophomore Tiffany Yokeley has been a member of team for two years. Yokeley performed in “Sisterhood” and said that it was her favorite routine. “I was able to bond with other swimmers, and we were able to choreograph the piece together,” said Yokeley. Fresh man and first year team mem ber Kara Redmond said that she enjoyed the piece because Meredith's synchronized swim team, the Aqua Angels, performed last week. Photo Carol Bkown she loved the music and thought the routine was great. Head Coach Carol Brown has been at Meredith for the past 17 years. She felt that the performances were successful, saying, “I thought the perfor mance was very good, and the students did an excellent job of executing the moves.” Brown said that in order to prepare for a performance, the team starts choosing a theme about a year ahead of time. They then begin selecting music and starting the choreog raphy of the routines the semester before the perfor mance. Brown also said that she. as well as Assistant Coach Tracy Pynn, who choreographed the U2 routine, Susie Sutton and guest choreographer Fame Breeza, who choreographed “Circus,” worked with the team to choreograph the pieces for this year’s spring perfor mance. Senior Sandra Dexter has been a member of the Aqua Angels since her freshman year. She said that her favorite part of being a member of the team was that she was “a part of girls that enjoy swimming as much as 1 do and are as dedi cated and as hardworking as I am when it comes to wanting fcSAvma CAMPn? Juniors Susie Mathes and Jennifer Phillips understand the importance of team work and cherish the friendships they have made with team members. Both Mathes and Phillips said that close friend ships formed between the members of the team provide a good support group during practice and outside the pool. The Aqua Angels put on per formances in the fall and spring each year. The next perfor mance will be Nov. 16 and 17. the team’s traditional Christ mas performance. Brown noted that students who are interested in joining the team can try out in the fall. If students do not already have a background in synchronized swimming, they will need to take the synchronized swim ming class, which will allow them the opportunity to try out. Brown said that most of the current team members had no prior experience in synchro nized swimming specifically and (hat most students start by taking the class. The team will perform during freshman ori entation this August. This per formance, she said, will demonstrate to students what synchronized swimming is about. Informative series ends Women’s History Month PARCELf CKTrMlba/AncWAbttoriffc/rwfKttif www.pireelplui.eom Lisa Wilson SlaH Wmer Have you ever wanted to learn more about your past or about the women who got modem women where they are today? While you can certainly learn about those women all year long, last Friday marked the end of National Women's History Month. As an all women’s college Meredith College emphasized this month and made it just a little bit eas ier to leam about women's his tory. History professor Dr. LeAn- na Keith and Meredith junior Lyda Fontes put together sever al meetings last week. Each night, a panel of Meredith graduates from different decades met with students and faculty to discuss college life in that particular decade. The meetings were held in the Mae Grimmer Alumnae House. On Monday there were Meredith graduates from the 1940s, Tuesday they were from the 1950s. Wednesday they were from the 1960s and Thursday they were from the 1970s. The number of students who attended the meetings increased as the week went on. Thursday night was also a time for current students to net work with former students, finding possible jobs and internships. Every night opened with the panel members giving a brief description of things they remember from college as well as what they had done since graduation. Also, the audience had a chance to ask the gradu ates questions. Many questions that would seem like hist(»7 questions to current students were issues that pertained their lives. For example, on the 1940s night, a student asked the question, “What was your impression when the United States dropped the bombT’ On Wednesday night, the 1960s, the panelists remem bered seeing fires burning in downtown Raleigh on the evening of Dr. Martin Luther King’s assassination. Junior Missy Neff attended all of the meetings. She also was part of the networking din ner that was held before the meeting on Thursday. Neff said, “I think it is important to learn abut people from the past, especially the recent past, and also with women to see how far we have come."
