April 5, 2000 Meredith Herald Campus Extras 5 Softball team rounds out season with wins Lkksha Austin Stan Writer In spite of losing some key players to injuries lace in the season, the Meredith College softball team has pulled togeth er to prove that they have what it takes to be winners. The Angels played two games against Campbell Uni versity’s JV team at home on Monday, Apr. 3, winning the first game 10-2 and the second 13-4. They traveled to Greensboro College to play a double-head- er on Wednesday, Apr. 5 and won the first game 15-5 and the second 10-6, improving their record to 21-3. ‘This is the best start we've had since I’ve been here, and Dr. Huber (assistant coach) has been here longer than me and he agrees,” said head coach Carl Hatchell. The Meredith tennis team traveled to Memphis. Tenn. this past Thursday to play in the Atlantic South Regional Tournament at Rhodes Col lege. Though many teams would have shied away from a tourna ment against such elite teams as Emory University, the Meredith team went into the weekend with high hopes. Meredith Coach Melinda Campbell described Emory as being a "nationally ranked powerhouse.” To play against them was intended more to see how the Meredith team mea sured up than to actually defeat Eimory. However, a level of victory was indeed a major goal for the weekend. The lop five teams that result after this past tournament and other games this week will detennine which teams will make it to nationals. High intensity as to which way the tournament would go filled the Angels as junior Kristin Monaco won in number six singles, giving the team a chance to still win the match. According to sophomore shortstop Ginger Moore, this is a young team composed of eleven freshman, three sopho mores and two juniors. “We have lost some vital players from our team to injury, but we’ve managed to keep our spirits up and work together as a team to compen sate.” said sophomore center fielder Jen Penny. “Luckily the injuries didn’t come until the end of the sea son. and we have a lot of fresh man who were able to lake the places of the injured players," commented Miwre. Penny explained lhat Junior second baseman Tamara Foulks and freshman pitcher Naomi Scott are out for the rest of the season due to injuries. Freshman pitcher Amanda Palmer explained that there was concern when Scott was injured because the team did Tarin Slozak. freshman, also won in singles, which again provided the Meredith team with further opportunities to defeat their opponents overall. However, they found defeat in the first doubles, losing 9-7. This particular game was inten.se because (he Angels actually had the lead at one point, but Just didn't have "enough juice to beat Emory,” said Campbell- Ullimately, the Meredith team lost to limory University 9-0, and to Rhodes College 7- 2. Both opponents provided tough competition and allowed •he Angels to evaluate their game against nationally ranked teams. While the tournament has passed, the intensity remains high as Meredith waits to see if they will maintain their #5 spot. If so. they hope to be the first Meredith tennis team and one of the first Meredith sports teams to ever compete in the national tournament. TTtey will find out by the end of this week whether they will indeed be (raveling to nationals, which takes place the weekend of graduation. not know who could fill her position as pitcher. “We’ve been very fortunate (hat Sara Barbour came to Meredith because she’s filled in for Naomi and she has done a great Job at the plate as well,” commented Hatchell. “I’m glad to see Sara pitch because I couldn’t have done it alone. She didn’t want to at first, but she has been a good sport about it,” staled Palmer. Palmer said that she and Barbour are both suffering from minor injuries so they have to be careful. They are playing in spite of pain in their elbows, which they ice down every day to keep the swelling down. ‘The pitchers are doing well filling in.” commented fresh man catcher Lauren Akers. According to Hatchell, “In terms of injuries, we began with sixteen players and now we are down to twelve. We have been scoring a lot or runs, and some players have really stepped up their games and pulled us through.” Penny commented. “Not only are we a strong defensive team, but we also have a dependable lineup.” “I've enjoyed my first year playing for Meredith very much. I think the season has gone well and is one of Mered ith's best seasons ever,” staled Akers. Moore said, “Overall I’m very, very pleased with the sea son. I believe this is one of the most talented and hardworking teams Meredith has ever had." The Angels will travel to Danville, Virginia on Friday. April 14 to play rival Averett, and will end their season in Winston-Salem on Saturday. April 15 against Wake Forest University’s club team.
