In spite of losing some key
players to injuries lace in the
season, the Meredith College
softball team has pulled togeth
er to prove that they have what
it takes to be winners.
The Angels played two
games against Campbell Uni
versity’s JV team at home on
Monday, Apr. 3, winning the
first game 10-2 and the second
13-4.
They traveled to Greensboro
College to play a double-head-
er on Wednesday, Apr. 5 and
won the first game 15-5 and the
second 10-6, improving their
record to 21-3.
‘This is the best start we've
had since I’ve been here, and
Dr. Huber (assistant coach) has
been here longer than me and
he agrees,” said head coach
Carl Hatchell.
The Meredith tennis team
traveled to Memphis. Tenn.
this past Thursday to play in
the Atlantic South Regional
Tournament at Rhodes Col
lege.
Though many teams would
have shied away from a tourna
ment against such elite teams
as Emory University, the
Meredith team went into the
weekend with high hopes.
Meredith Coach Melinda
Campbell described Emory as
being a "nationally ranked
powerhouse.” To play against
them was intended more to see
how the Meredith team mea
sured up than to actually defeat
Eimory. However, a level of
victory was indeed a major
goal for the weekend. The lop
five teams that result after this
past tournament and other
games this week will detennine
which teams will make it to
nationals.
High intensity as to which
way the tournament would go
filled the Angels as junior
Kristin Monaco won in number
six singles, giving the team a
chance to still win the match.
According to sophomore
shortstop Ginger Moore, this is
a young team composed of
eleven freshman, three sopho
mores and two juniors.
“We have lost some vital
players from our team to
injury, but we’ve managed to
keep our spirits up and work
together as a team to compen
sate.” said sophomore center
fielder Jen Penny.
“Luckily the injuries didn’t
come until the end of the sea
son. and we have a lot of fresh
man who were able to lake the
places of the injured players,"
commented Miwre.
Penny explained lhat Junior
second baseman Tamara
Foulks and freshman pitcher
Naomi Scott are out for the rest
of the season due to injuries.
Freshman pitcher Amanda
Palmer explained that there
was concern when Scott was
injured because the team did
Tarin Slozak. freshman, also
won in singles, which again
provided the Meredith team
with further opportunities to
defeat their opponents overall.
However, they found defeat
in the first doubles, losing 9-7.
This particular game was
inten.se because (he Angels
actually had the lead at one
point, but Just didn't have
"enough juice to beat Emory,”
said Campbell-
Ullimately, the Meredith
team lost to limory University
9-0, and to Rhodes College 7-
2. Both opponents provided
tough competition and allowed
•he Angels to evaluate their
game against nationally ranked
teams.
While the tournament has
passed, the intensity remains
high as Meredith waits to see if
they will maintain their #5
spot. If so. they hope to be the
first Meredith tennis team and
one of the first Meredith sports
teams to ever compete in the
national tournament. TTtey will
find out by the end of this week
whether they will indeed be
(raveling to nationals, which
takes place the weekend of
graduation.
not know who could fill her
position as pitcher.
“We’ve been very fortunate
(hat Sara Barbour came to
Meredith because she’s filled
in for Naomi and she has done
a great Job at the plate as well,”
commented Hatchell.
“I’m glad to see Sara pitch
because I couldn’t have done it
alone. She didn’t want to at
first, but she has been a good
sport about it,” staled Palmer.
Palmer said that she and
Barbour are both suffering
from minor injuries so they
have to be careful. They are
playing in spite of pain in their
elbows, which they ice down
every day to keep the swelling
down.
‘The pitchers are doing well
filling in.” commented fresh
man catcher Lauren Akers.
According to Hatchell, “In
terms of injuries, we began
with sixteen players and now
we are down to twelve. We
have been scoring a lot or runs,
and some players have really
stepped up their games and
pulled us through.”
Penny commented. “Not
only are we a strong defensive
team, but we also have a
dependable lineup.”
“I've enjoyed my first year
playing for Meredith very
much. I think the season has
gone well and is one of Mered
ith's best seasons ever,” staled
Akers.
Moore said, “Overall I’m
very, very pleased with the sea
son. I believe this is one of the
most talented and hardworking
teams Meredith has ever had."
The Angels will travel to
Danville, Virginia on Friday.
April 14 to play rival Averett,
and will end their season in
Winston-Salem on Saturday.
April 15 against Wake Forest
University’s club team.
