Meredith Herald August 30, 2000 Campus News Freshmeni On your mark, get set, file for office Lora Tillman Siatr Writer Ever dreamed of becoming a senator, vice-president, or even president? If so, then Sept. 5 • 8 is the week for you. That week is the week of freshmen elections filing, a time for all freshmen to step up to the time honored Meredith tradition of becoming involved. Not interested in a major office of president, vice presi dent, secretary, treasurer or his torian? There are several co chair options for those students who wish to concentrate on more specific activities such as Comhuskin’ or Stunt. From now until Friday, Sept. 1, elections information will be available for freshmen in the Office of Student Activities and i-eadership Development, as well as the first floor parlors of freshmen residence halls. Meredith’s Elections Board encourages students to stop by, look through the material and find a position that is right for them. From there, students need to pick up a filing card from the Office of Student Activities and fill it out anytime from by Sept. 8. The office is located on the second floor of the Cate Center just before you reach the eleva tor. After filing, all candidates mu.st attend one of two elections workshops. The first wHl be held in Kresge Auditori um, located on first Cate, on Wednesday, Sept. 6 from 8 to 9 p.m. The second will be held on Friday, Sept. 8 from 10 to 10:50 a.m. in lOI Ledford. After attending a workshop, candidates can begin their cam paigning on Monday, Sept. 11 at 8 a.m. All flyers and mail ings must be approved by the Office of Student Activities before they are distributed. Candidates will then give their speeches on Tuesday, Sept. 12 from 7 to 8 p.m. in the Chapel. Only the candidates for the five major offices are required to give speeches, but all candi dates are welcome to partici pate, and all freshmen are encouraged to attend the speeches. Finally, elections polling will begin on Monday, Sept. 18 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and will resume Tuesday, Sept. 19 at 9 a.m., ending at 7 p.m. Students must have their CamCard in order to vote and are encouraged to vote at some point during the two day peri od. If run-off elections are needed, they will be held on Thursday. Sept. 12 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Most cantpus lead ers would agree that getting involved is an important facet of the Meredith environ ment. Becoming involved enhances students’ personalities in terms of self-confidence, assertiveness and abil ity to work, with peo ple. Being involved also teaches students valu able skills such as cooperation, organiza tion, and fiexibility, and of course students gain the opportunity to meet and work with new people, gain experiences that will last a lifetime and have a part in the life of Meredith. SGA President Leslie Gilliland said, ‘it is of the utmost importance for Mered ith students to find at least one club or organization to become involved in while they are here. “Campus involvement is a component of a well rounded education, as it encourages stu dents to take breaks from studying and participate in spe cial activities or meetings of interest. “In addition to programming and service organizations, Meredith also has clubs within most majors. “Clearly, there are many wonderful opportunities to become involved— take advan tage of them!” she added Students are encouraged to do as Gilliland says and “take advantage” of the many oppor tunities to get involved. There is no greater way to do this than through class elections. So find a position that suits you, pursue it, and make your mark on Meredith. Get involved in the freshman class!
