August 30, 2000 Meredith Herafd Campus Extras 5 Brent Road opponents celebrate Leslie Maxwell Editor in Last week, students had barely unpacked their belong ings and bought their books when school leaders sent them letters warning of the Brent Road party, which took place Saturday, Aug. 26. The letter, which was signed by administration including President Maureen Hartford , staff including Campus Minis ter Sam Carothers and student leaders including SGA Vice President Hope Parrish, addressed the issue of safety for Meredith students. Each year, the SGA (Student Government Association) mails the letter to all students advising them to use caution if they choose to attend the Brent Road party. This year, however, the cau tion of the letter was a little stronger as laws in Raleigh changed over the summer. The new ordinance in Raleigh says that landlords are held responsible for their guests’ actions. In addition, the Raleigh Police Department warned that any violation, even a misdemeanor, would result in full arrest. SGA President Leslie Gilliland said, ‘The letter was different this year because of the new ordinance. We wanted to give students the facts so that they could make an edu cated decision." The party, which traditional ly takes place the weekend after school starts, has turned into one of the largest parties on the East Coast. Held on Brent Road, off of Gor man the forces Brent Road toclose to cars. This year, the Raleigh Police set up three check points for cars on the way into the vicinity of Brent Road and one checkpoint for pedestrians at the beginning of Brent Road. By midnight on Saturday, 117 people had been charged with 130 offences. Many of these people had motor vehicle violations including expired registrations. About 20 people were arrest ed. and 12 of them were actual ly on Brent Road. Most of these people were charged with noise or open-container viola tions. Police had said that they were prepared for up to 700 arrests. In addition to the problems that a Meredith student could face if arrested at Brent Road, she also faces the Meredith Honor Council. The Student Activities Handbook reports that “the College reserves the right to make vi ola- tions of federal, state or local law by its stu dents a matter for con- sidera- t i 0 n and action of Honor Council.” To encourage students to avoid Brent Road, N.C. State sponsored an alcohol-free alternative party called Cross roads. Non-State students paid $10 and received a concert by Jump Little Children and Tonic, pizza, drinks and carni val rides. State students paid $5 for the concert. While many students were not happy with the restrictions on their fun. opponents of the party on Brent Road had cause to celebrate. Meredith was not the only college in the area warning stu dents about the dangers of attending Brent Road. Indeed, N.C. State Chancel lor Marye Ann Fox sent letters to the parents of N.C. State stu dents over the summer advis ing them that the city of Raleigh has no tolerance for those causing problems on Brent Road. N.C. State also sent all undergraduates letters similar to those that Meredith students received. Gilliland was pleased with the response to the letter because she believes that the warnings of the letter prevent ed some Meredith students from attending Brent Road on Saturday night.
