Volleyball triumphs over Peace
Betsy Rhame
Staff Writer
Three weeks of intense prac
tices or games practically every
day of the week paid off Sept. 8
as Meredith’s volleyball team
defeated its across-town rival.
Peace College.
The game was well attended
by the Meredith community,
but nearly Peace fans who had
traveled across town for the
face-off filled nearly half the
stands.
‘The fan support was awe
some," Tamara Foulks said, a
senior and one of the three
team captains. “It really
pumped us up. It really kept
our morale up.”
Coach Kathy Mayberry
agreed.
“That was really helpful,”
she said.
The match got off to a good
start when Peace was unable to
return a serve by freshman set
ter Jenna Hottel, giving the
Angels the first point scored.
The first game ended in
Meredith’s favor, with a score
of 15-9.
The Angels were down in
the second game but sewed a
run of seven points in a row to
establish the lead. Meredith
won the second game as well,
with a score of 15-11.
In all its intensity, Peace
took the third game by a mere
by two points.
The fourth game was won by
the Angels, with a score of IS
IS.
Members of the Meredith
volleyball team acknowledged
before the game that they knew
Peace would be ready for them,
so their competitiveness on the
court came as no surprise.
"We knew that coming in.
Peace would be fired up and
ready lo go,” Foulks said after
the game.
Kelley Davidson, a senior
and the team’s other captain,
felt the same.
“Peace would rather have a
record of 1-30 and beat us than
have a record of 30-1 and not,”
she said. "It’s a great rivalry.”
Mayberry and Foulks were
satisfied with the team’s per
formance against Peace.
“I thought it was a well-
played match on both team's
parts.” Mayberry said. "We
went four games and had some
players really step up and make
some key plays lo win the close
fourth game and then to win
the match."
Foulks said, “We played
smart.”
Friday night the Angels
faced Chowan College, putting
another victory under their
belt. The scores in the three
games were 15-4, 15-10 and
15-4 respectively.
“Everyone stepped up
against Chowan and made a
significant contribution to the
win,” Davidson said.
The Angels played Ran-
dolph-Macon College on Sat
urday, also winning the match
in three games. The scores of
the three games were 16-14,
15-5 and 16-14, respectively.
“We were not playing our
best and we still won decisive
ly,” Davidson said. ‘That says
a lot about our team.”
The team plays again tonight
at Methodist College in Fayet
teville at 7 p.m. Friday night
they will face Guilford College
here at 6:30 p.m. On Sept. 19
the team will play N.C. Wes
leyan College at 7 p.m. in the
gym.

Soccer team’s spirits up for games
Holden Burke
staff Writer
As it enters the season with
high hopes and a new line-up,
this year’s Meredith soccer
team is working hard to have a
gO(xl season.
Despite their defeats this
past week against Randolph
Macon Woman’s College, the
University of the South at
Sewanee and Washington and
Lee; the players have a positive
attitude about what is yet to
come.
The players remarked that a
win would have been nice, but
they noted that they all wt>rked
together.
Freshman Martha Bleckly
.said. "We all worked hard and
put in the best effort that we
could.”
These losses did not enlin-
guish their Meredith spirit to
meet the challenges to conte.
The team is indeed a “fivsh"
one this year, consisting pri
marily of freshmen, many of
whom did not join the team
until a few short weeks ago.
However, despite the new
faces and the short time they
have had together as a team,
they have managed to "get
along really well as a team,"
said freshman Betsy Hyman.
The players gave it their all
this past weekend at a tuurna-
nient in which they faced up to
University of the South at
Sewanee on Saturday. Sept. 9
and Washington and Lee on
Sunday. Sept. H).
"Everyone worked hard the
whole time." said Head Coach
Glad Bugariu. Although the
team did not come home with
an overall win on the field,
there were some individual
succes.ses.
Senior and Civcaptain Mon-
isha Egerton was selected for
the alternative team during ihe
weekend tournament. Only the
best 11 players out of all four
teen teams participating in the
tournament were chosen for
this team
According to Bugariu, who
is also new to Meredith this
year, the team is led by senior
captains Egenon and Samantha
Plume, who serve as great
leaders for this young team,
and returning players Katie
Phillips and Jade Buchanan.
With such strong leadership
and a positive attitude. Bugariu
said the team is ready lo take
this season head on. He added
that the team is “looking for
ward to future matches where
they can rise to a level where
they can be more successful.”
The first home game is this
Friday at 4 p.m. against Emery
and Henry College. They also
play again at home on Saturday
at 4 p.m. as they take on Vir
ginia Intermont College. All
students are encouraged lo sup
port the Meredith College Six:-
cer team in this weekend's
matches.
