Meredith Herald December 6, 2000 2 Campus News Meredith continues to meet VP candidates Lindsgy McAdams Slatf Writer Meredith College is getting ready to launch its biggest cap ital campaign to dale. Students, alumnae, faculty, staff and oth ers will play a key role in its success. This campaign will mainly be managed by the vice presi dent for Institutional Advance ment, which Meredith is cur rently in search of since current Vice President Murphy Osborne announced his retire ment. The new vice president will work closely with President Maureen Hartford to make sure that Meredith gets the funds it needs in order to continue giv ing women the best education Tracy Sumner Stan Writer Next Saturday, Dec. J6, Meredith College will honor its newest graduating students. In a commencement ceremony beginning at 10 a.m. in Jones Auditorium, approximately 100 students will receive their diplomas. North Carolina Supreme Court Justice Henry E. Frye will be (he featured speaker of the ceremony. Frye was the first African-American to serve in the North Carolina House of Representatives, the North Carolina Supreme Court, and as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. Chief Justice Frye has received several notable awards from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, North Carolina A & T State University, Shaw University, and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro for his distinguished service to the state of North Carolina. possible. The new initiatives set forth by Hartford will allow Meredith to expand its pro grams and become recognized outside of the South. Currently, the .search is underway for a new vice presi dent of Institutional Advance ment. So far, two candidates have visited the campus. Last week, David Gesue came to Meredith. Thursday, Nov. 30. Kenneth W. Chandler spent the day on campus. Chandler is currently assist ing Wake Educational Partner ship with their capital cam paign. Previously, he was vice president for Institutional Advancement at Saint Augus tine’s College here in Raleigh. One of his main duties was directing all the activities His other awards include the R.R. Wright Award, Associa tion of Black Lawyers’ Lawyer of the Year, and the Kelly M. Alexander Humanitarian Award. Frye is a member of the Greensboro Business Leaders Hall of Fame. Frye, a summa cum laude graduate of North Carolina A&T, received his law degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Katherine Jones, a member ofthe class of 2001, is graduat ing a semester eariier than her class. Jones, a biology major, said, “I am excited to be gradu ating early but sad because I won’t be walking with my class.” She added, “I’ll always be 2001 in heart and spirit." December graduates who are walking in the ceremony will be allotted six tickets for friends and family members to sit in Jones Auditorium. He received his bachelor of science degree from Guilford College and is working on his Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He is seeking the degree from Greensboro’s School of Education. He received his master’s degree in government administration from the University of Penn sylvania. Chandler said that he sees Dr. Susan Wessels, interim dean of the School of Business, said of the selection of Adkins as the Dean of the School of Business. “I am very pleased. He is a dean with extensive academic and business experi ence.” According to Wessels, Adkins’ experience and his knowledge about the accredita tion process set him apart from other can didates. This knowledge is particu larly valu able since the busi ness school is investi gating the viability of national A A C S B accredita tion. Senior business major Leslie Gilliland, SGA president and undergraduate student repre sentative on the selection com mittee, agreed with Wessels that Adkins’ experience work ing with faculty through the accreditation process is a plus. “He has a great vision for the school and for the MBA pro gram. I am very excited,” said Gilliland. She added that Adkins also has experience in capital cam- the role of vice president for Institutional Advancement at Meredith as one to “help bring the campus together in promot ing and making this campaign successful” and “educating the campus about what Institution al Advancement does.” Chandler said that he enjoyed his job, especially meeting people and being suc cessful at fundraising. He also noted that the key to any fundraising campaign is the people who donate money. As Meredith is a college, alum nae are vital to the school’s campaign. Chandler said that educating people about the campaign is very important. Others present at the meeting agreed. Chandler was interviewed paigning and raising funds to improve technology and raise the standards of the program. “I think he will be a great asset, not only to the School of Business but to the whole Meredith community. He is open, fun to talk to and I think students will enjoy him.” added Gilliland. She explained that she con sidered his outgoing, upbeat personal ity to be what set him apart from other c a n d i - dates and that his interac tion with students and fac ulty was well received when he visited campus. Wessels explained that some of the goals for the School of Business include raising the quality of the undergraduate and graduate programs, gain ing AACSP accreditation, and as a result of this accreditation, making Meredith’s program more visible to the business community. She believes that Adkins can help turn the School of Busi ness' goals into reality. Thursday at an open meeting. The meeting was held in 101 Ledford Hall from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Tyndall receives awards Sherry Shapirc) Professor o( Dance Krystal Tyndall, a senior at Meredith College,-.received two honorary scholarships recently for her outstanding efforts and dedication to dance education. Tyndall was named North Carolina’s Outstanding Dance Student based on leader ship application, academic standards and dedication to the field of dance. She was also awarded the Nathan Taylor Dodson Scholarship which has been given annually by North Carolina Alliance for Athletics. Health, Physical Education. Recreation and Dance since 1969, The criteria for the Dodson scholarship of $1,000 is evi dence of leadership and contri butions to the profession, acad emics and being a member of NCAAHPERD. The awards will be presented at the North Carolina Alliance for Athletics. Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance conven tions in Greensboro, NC, on Dec. 9. 2000.
