Chapel will be

music from Cuba
It's a new semester—what
are poor college students to do
in the dark, culd grip of winter,
especially when they’ve just
paid for a semester’s worth of
books and December’s holiday
fun?
The Herald has a few sug
gestions.
1) North Carotina Museum
of Art.
Currently, the museum has
its usual art. which, if you’ve
never seen before is worth
checking out. In addition, the
new exhibit “Is Seeing Believ
ing?” is on display now
through April 1, 2001. The lat
est exhibit features contempo
rary photography containing
surreal elements, including
William Wegmen’s famous
dogs. This exhibit is free, as is
the rest of the museum, but feel
free to contribute a donation
for posterity. Contact the
NCMA at (919) 839-6262 for
more information on hours,
exhibits and workshops.
2) American Dance Festi
val
Begiitning next week, ADF
is presenting the Pilobolus
Institute in Durham from Ian.
22-31. The two-week program
provides students and teachers
with a look into the realm of
dance and choreography. For
more information on the work
shops and performances, con
tact the ADF website at
www.americandancefestival.
org or call (919) 684-6402.
3) North Carolina Museum
of Natural Sciences
In February, which is not as
far away as it seems, the muse
um will have on display the
exhibit “Extreme Deep; Mis
sion to the Abyss” from Feb.
17 through May 6,2001. In the
depths of winter, after the
groundhog has seen his shadow
and cursed us to six more
weeks of winter, get warm by
learning about the ocean, its
volcanoes and its life forms.
The exhibit shows the impor
tance of biology, history and
chemistry. Admission is only
$5, and tickets can be bought at
the museum. Call the museum
at (919) 733-7450 for more
information.

There’s something about
world rhythms and exotic, for
eign sounds that draws people
in, that entices them to come
listen.
And that is what the folks in
the Office of the Campus Min
ister hope happens next
Wednesday, Jan. 24, at the 10
a.m. chapel service. There, the
Christian music group Kairos,
which hails originally from
Cuba, will make an appear
ance. Next Wednesday's con
gregation may even learn some
Cuban music.
The six musicians in the
group are quite popular in
Cuba. The members of the
group are young professionals
who gave up their careers to
devote their time to Christian
music.
Penny Ulmer, the assistant to
the Campus Minister, said,
“They come very highly rec-
comended.”

Though Ulmer noted that the
group is fairly selective about
where they go on tour, the
group has toured the U.S.
seven times, as well as Puerto
Rico and of course, their home
country of Cuba.
Campus Minister Sam
Caroihers learned of this
Cuban group through Paula
Dempsey, a Meredith alumna
ar>d current campus minister at
Mars Hill College in Western
Nc»th Carolina. Dempsey has
traveled to Cuba and met mem
bers of the group there.
The group will play next
Wednesday evening at Pullen
Park Baptist Church and next
Thursday at Campbell Univer
sity.
Carothers is excited about
Kairos coming to Meredith
because he noted that “it gets
us out of our boxes.”
‘This helps us to remember
that what we understand as the
Christian faith is not necessari
ly the norm.”
