Get active with these ideas Chapel will be alive with Latin beats, Christian music from Cuba It's a new semester—what are poor college students to do in the dark, culd grip of winter, especially when they’ve just paid for a semester’s worth of books and December’s holiday fun? The Herald has a few sug gestions. 1) North Carotina Museum of Art. Currently, the museum has its usual art. which, if you’ve never seen before is worth checking out. In addition, the new exhibit “Is Seeing Believ ing?” is on display now through April 1, 2001. The lat est exhibit features contempo rary photography containing surreal elements, including William Wegmen’s famous dogs. This exhibit is free, as is the rest of the museum, but feel free to contribute a donation for posterity. Contact the NCMA at (919) 839-6262 for more information on hours, exhibits and workshops. 2) American Dance Festi val Begiitning next week, ADF is presenting the Pilobolus Institute in Durham from Ian. 22-31. The two-week program provides students and teachers with a look into the realm of dance and choreography. In the depths of winter, after the groundhog has seen his shadow and cursed us to six more weeks of winter, get warm by learning about the ocean, its volcanoes and its life forms. The exhibit shows the impor tance of biology, history and chemistry. Admission is only $5, and tickets can be bought at the museum. Call the museum at (919) 733-7450 for more information. And that is what the folks in the Office of the Campus Min ister hope happens next Wednesday, Jan. 24, at the 10 a.m. chapel service. There, the Christian music group Kairos, which hails originally from Cuba, will make an appear ance. Next Wednesday's con gregation may even learn some Cuban music. The six musicians in the group are quite popular in Cuba. The members of the group are young professionals who gave up their careers to devote their time to Christian music. Though Ulmer noted that the group is fairly selective about where they go on tour, the group has toured the U.S. seven times, as well as Puerto Rico and of course, their home country of Cuba. Campus Minister Sam Caroihers learned of this Cuban group through Paula Dempsey, a Meredith alumna ar>d current campus minister at Mars Hill College in Western Nc»th Carolina. Dempsey has traveled to Cuba and met mem bers of the group there. The group will play next Wednesday evening at Pullen Park Baptist Church and next Thursday at Campbell Univer sity.
