According to Leslie Gilliland. SOA president, SGA began looking into the possibil ity of extending Open House hours as a result of students’ expressing their concerns both at campus forums and with stu dent comment cards. Gilliland explained that SGA formed a committee com prised of the presidents of SGA, Student Life Committee, Residence Hall Board, Senate, their advisers and Dr. Jean Jackson, vice president for Stu dent Development, to explore the possibility of expanding current Open House hours. This ad hoc committee decided to hold a referendum to allow all current students to express their views on Mered ith’s Open House Policy for the 2001-02 school year. (See box). "We hope that students will look favorably on the referen dum,” said Gilliland. “SGA decided to hold the referen- dums along with the campus wide elections so that students would know the policies before housing sign-ups.” In addition, Gilliland explained that the referendum will also allow rising seniors to vote on whether or not to ban smoking in Barefoot Residence Hall for the 2001-2002 school year in response to student con cerns regarding the recent fire in Heilman Residence Hall. A meeting was held Monday night to allow residents of Heilman and Barefoot Resi dence Halls to discuss and vote on whether or not to ban smok ing in their dorms beginning Feb. 26, according to Gilliland. Susannah Grant, resident assistant on second Heilinan, said that “there was a lot of ten sion" at the meeting, led by Heidi LeCount, director of Residence Life. “Some students believed their lives were in danger because of ‘irresponsible behavior,’ while others explained that they were living on third Heilman because it is the only floor they could smoke on,” reported Grant. She said, "1 think [the meet ing] was productive in the sense that people got to say what was on their minds, but I don’t know if they feel like the issue was resolved.” According to Grant, there were approximately 100 resi dents in the room who voted, and the results will be consid ered by the administration. And a decision will be announced by week’s end. Gilliland stressed that the results of the referendum will be used by SGA “to make appropriate recommendations to Dr. Jackson” concerning both the Open House Policy and the smoking policy for Barefoot Residence Hall. She encourages students to vote Feb. 19-20, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., in first Cate.
