September 5, 2001 Meredith Herald Campus News^ Paintings on silk displayed in show Jamie TuNNtXL News Editor Silk painting has been a form of art for centuries in Asia and Europe and has crossed the ocean to America and become very popular in the past few years. One of the latest exhibits in the Gaddy-Hamrick building on campus is an exhibit called The Possibilities of Nature and features four Meredith students who have been working with silk painting this summer. Collins’ artwork focuses on fibers and drawing, and the Serti technique is a technique that allows her to use both. When the dye is applied to the silk, it spreads. In order to cre ate some type of order and boundary on the silk, the artist must control the flow by enclosing a “fence” on the silk. Her artwork reflects extremes in life, and she makes Lynda Collins sold her painted reference to “contrasting images, bright and dull, hard and soft, joy and sorrow." emotions that are all repre sented in h e r pieces. Busch also uses images from nature-- mainiy a focus on Philoden- d r o n in her artwork before discover ing the spontaneity of using paint on silk. Molly Jensen has been paint ing on silk for the past year, but has been painting since she was a little girl. Her senior exhibi tion will be next spring and her thesis is on contemporary quilt ing. Weatherly said that her inter ests in coastal wildlife all over the world has been her model. In preparation for her silk painting, she researched each ing colors.
