Meredith Herald . September 12, 2001 2 Campus News Bemused with your computer? Take a class Lindsey Wray staff Reporter Students today are ]ucky to have their own computers. Afterall, they are living in the technology age in which com puter capabilities improve every year and the price tag continues to rise. However, whether students use their computers to chat online with friends who are reciprocating the activity across the hatl or researching a certain topic of interest, they put their computers to good use. But sometimes students are unaware of all the capabilities of their computers. TTierefore, for the first time, the Office of Technology Ser vices is offering classes to assist students with software programs. Students can take classes on programs such as Office 2000, Netscape, Microsoft Access, Excel, Power Point, Microsoft Word, Publisher, Messenger and Image Composer. Students cannot take the classes for credit; however, they are free. Technology Ser vices has designed the classes to offer helpful assistance to students in a fifty minute time period, so they hope to keep the classes small- “We are looking for at least five people to be present, with a max of ten to a class,” said Melanie Ivy of Technology Services Ivy strongly encour ages students to attend the classes and give them a try. The technicians at Technolo gy Services are aware of the greater demand for online assistance due to the increase of student computers on cam pus this fall. Therefore, they have created a front-page icon that sujdents can click upon and access Technology Ser vices dir^tiy from the Mered ith home page. verse College in South Caroli na or Elon University in Burlington, N.C., Hartford said Meredith sizes up. “Let’s just put it this way,” she said. “There is one college in Wisconsin below us.” Students see the increase in tuition from different perspec tives. Without generous financial aid, many are worried of hav ing to transfer. Others see the benefit of increased tuition in improving the college as a whole. Still others, such as prospec tive students, see the price tag of a Meredith College educa tion as daunting. Afterall, according to new processing numbers, admission is down by about S% and that could have something to do with the cost of attending. “We care about you, and we are going to find ways to keep you in school if you want to be here,” said Hartford Andy Richards, a member of the Tech Services team, was in favor of new icon and antici pates a positive response from the Meredith community. The training classes were created with laptop students in mind, but ail Meredith students are encouraged to attend. “I am excited that we are teaching the students this year who experienced technical demands last year, so we hope they take advantage of it,” said Richards. Meredith community mem bers already seem receptive. Sophomore Krista Kearny, called the classes “a promising ATTACK continued from page one ty were left to wonder how this tragedy could happen. When the Meredith com munity gathered in the Chapel yesterday for sup port and prayer. Rev. Sam Carothers, campus minister, addressed how important it is to stay calm and listed ways we can help. He explained that the country's blood supply will see a drastic- decrease, and Red Cross stations every where will need volunteers. Staying off the phones is also helpful as critical infor mation makes its way to res cue crews and the families and friends who are anx iously awaiting news, he added. The last issue that he addressed was the unity that step in the direction of integrat ing technology into a student’s educational path.” The next class is today, Sept. 12, at 2 p.m. in Harris Lab. He reminded the corfimunity that there are different faithSx^nd cultures represented on this campus and in our circles and everyone is devastated by this tragedy. Instead of drawing lines, Carothers encouraged every one to seek out and embrace those around them who need someone to talk to—no matter what their differences. Jackson read “Death, Be Not Proud” by John Donne, appro priate to the mindset of the community. In response to the day’s events and what might lie ahead, support services are offered to students, faculty and staff through the Counseling Center (x8427), the Campus Minister’s office (x8346) and the Social Work Department (x8438). INCREASE continued from page one Hartford talked about the administration’s commitment to keeping the impact on stu dents low by “pumping as much as we can into need- based aid.” Maxi mizing and increas- i n g endow ments, grants, scholar- ships and other revenue through fundrais ing is first on the col- I eg e’s agenda accord ing to H a r t - ford. “That will be our first push," she said. Jane Dittman, vice president for Institutional Advancement, said her office was in the process of organizing a “major fundraising campaign." . ‘This will include annual giving efforts, which benefit every area of the college and focused efforts on major insti tutional priorities such as scholarships,'' said Dittman. The problems associated with the tuition increase, how ever, will fall hardest on mid dle-class students who struggle with paying for the increase but do not quailify to receive finan cial aid. “We are keenly aware that for the college to be accessible for students ftom all back grounds, we must maintain a competitive level of finan cial aid and scholarships," said Dittman. In compari son to tuition of other pri vate colleges in the state, Meredith's tuition is comparable. ‘This put us fifteenth out of 36 pri vate colleges in North Car olina." said Hartford- In comparison to how Meredith ranks in cost of tuition among peer institutions, colleges and universities throughout the county that are similiar to Meredith in size and programs offered such as Con- Ksliiiialcd Breakdown of Technology Fee for Upper- class students for 2001-02 C’urrK'iilunt l>ihs .iKliidv' fund' to ijpiir.Kk' jII luirdsv.irc in cumaituni i.ihv open l.ibN and tv'!iL'na' h.ill l.ib' on d roUtn'Ti cvclc on lab nKK'hinos .=s needed ' V^i'ulh Svsu niN incUidi,’'' fund' n> rcpfaa- hjrduarc fora)) full and iJnmcl t;kuliv on an -* ■I I .'ole '0 that l.k'ullj hardu.irc vmI! be ci‘nsi'tctu ‘.uitJcnt lucdwartf, SI75,K» Suff SsvUrns I n cl mil,’'' hJiuS U> tor Xhc iiptraUi; roplaa** nieni or Nitppon Ntalf* hardw.Jtc on a U' rota- SHMMMI NHw^rk Impmxcmcnlv inoludc'* liinU'' 10 tor ihc i:\p.insum and maintc* tuncc ot ihc sKircK'N' ,inU to iipur.idc oi rcpljce L'anipuN Ncrvers a^ needed $ $i\.W T(echnolofi> Jienim soppon includC' fund'' to pnn jde ^al.irv and hcnclil'' for vi^hi udduionii! kehnolopv scrsictjv vuppon person nel and s.il.iry far 14 addinanjil \tudt?ni avM^.tantN in the '«crMcev lircu.
