Meredith Herald September 26, 2000 8 Selkie: A woman’s quest to find herself Features Lindsey Wray Siaff Reponer The Meredith Performs pro duction of Selkie by Laurie Brooks, a Scottish folktale about the coming of age of a young girl, opened last night at 7:30 p.m. in Jones Auditorium. The play has been in produc tion since the first day of class when a team of students began rehearsing. Selkie originally caught the eye of Catherine Rodgers, pro fessor of theatre, when she saw the children’s play version and fell in love with it. “It has gone very well, but right now we need an audi ence!" said Rodgers days before the opening night of Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2001. She said that she has really enjoyed working with the stu dents, as well as the playwright and others involved. Set design is by junior Chelsea Desantis “I enjoyed watching her learn from the creative process," said Rodgers about E)esantis. “She has done a excellent Job as a designer.” So who is Selkie? Or what is a selkie? A selkie is a seal that has died and come back to life. One of the selkies is played by junior Lisa Rost. Her character is captured by a man who steals her pelt. She lives on land as a human and has a child-Ellen Jean, played by junior Kristen Pat ten. She longs for the sea and while she loves her family on land, she knows she belongs to the sea with her other family. When asked how difficult it was to play the pan, Rost said it was “very challenging” because her character is “in love with a man [who] has stolen [the selkie’s] life from the sea.” “Finding the balance between the two was very diffi cult.” Patten plays the role of the vivacious thirteen-year-old Ellen Jean. She longs to be nor mal but is unable to be because her hands are webbed. She does not understand why she has webbed hands but knows that she does not feel like she belongs on land. Ellen Jean is also very close to her mother. “My role wasn’t too difficult to grasp,” said Patten, “but I found the [Scottish] accent very challenging. We want to sound authentic and be under stood completely at the same time. I have never had a major physical impairment to make me different from the others, but everyone has something lit tle that makes them a little bit of a outcast-'so I was able to relate to my own.” Selkie will be performing through Saturday, beginning each day at 7:30 p.m. and on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. The run time is fairly short, lasting about an hour. For those interested, the playwright Laurie Brooks will be answering questions after the Thursday, Friday and Satur day performances.
