Dear Editor. I would like to respond to the letter (“As students representing Meredith,” April 17, 2002, Letters) concerning the public display of affection that occured at the activities fair while incoming freshmen were visiting. Since then, letters have been written in response to the letter writer’s attempt to “puri fy” the Meredith community. Men and women are consistently seen holding hands and kissing around campus. Although men and women were not seen doing so at the fair, the fact is there are no men involved in Meredith activities, so there was no chance for public dis plays of affection to occur there. And I must point out that the two women at the booth have The Campus Forum yet to be seen on top of each other with their legs interlocked anywhere on this campus or in any other public place. However, I really am more appalled by the second set of letters that have been posted and displayed on the bulletin board of first floor Fairclolh. All this has done is further hurt more individuals and ■ with our sisters and friends. How true does that ring if we are tearing each other down? Also, we should be thinking about the distinct pos sibility that just one of those incoming fre.shmen might have teh reassured by seeing these two girls openly showing affec tion. This could have given this new mem ber of Meredith the courage to be herself and to know that we will support her in her decisions during her time at Meredith.' their beliefs. What we all need is to realize that we are one within these walls and that we should be supportive of everyone’s beliefs, despite their sexual preferences. We claim to attend a school where a bond stronger than life is formed, where we unite will support her in her decisions during her time at Meredith. We are all women and we all have the right to choose the way we live our lives. If we can’t be supportive of each other here, how can we ever be supportive outside of Meredith’s gates? Isn't that why we all came here in the first place—to grow and learn from one another and to become independent women that gain the strength and self confidence to take on the, world? Sincerely, Blair Ruark
