Rainy weather puts campus
construction behind schedule
The Science and
Mathematics Building’s
opening date has not
changed, but the
breezeway project is
now lagging behind.

While construction on the
Meredith campus is no
shock for most students,
faculty and staff, some have
said it does present incon
veniences, and they are
curious about the progress
of the breezeways and the
Science and Mathematics
Building.
"I anticipate the comple
tion of the breezeways
because ! am getting frus
trated by the inconvenience
and the mud," junior Laura
Bates said. "1 know they
cemnot prevent the weather
conditions, but the construc
tion schedule should have
bepn better planned to
adjust for the seasons."
Greg Ahrendsen of
Facilities Services said that
the breezeways had been
projected to be completed
by the end of September.
However, Ahrendsen said
the weather has set con
struction behind by over
four weeks.
"Weather is the primary
cause for the delay,
although there was an issue
with getting materials in on
time," he said, adding that
the issue with building
materials would have only
set construction back about
a week.
"Weather has caused hold
ups on building the ramps
and getting the first floor
concrete slab in," he said.
Facilities Services expects
that the breezeways will be
completed and accessible to
students by mid-November.
"I appreciate that the
school closed the breeze
ways because they were
unsafe, but 1 am not happy
with the amount of time it
has taken for the new
breezeways to be construct
ed," Bates said. "I was
under the impression they
would be finished by fall
break. It is a relief that they
will be opened soon.”
The Science and
Mathematics Building has
been ahead of schedule
since last semester and is
still running on track.
Ahrendsen says that the
weather has caused minor
delays in the overall com
pletion and opening of the
building but has not affected
the opening date.
"The inside of the building
is 99 Vi percent complete.
We are finishing up paint
ing, floor tile, cable televi
sion wiring, and things of
that sort," he added.
However, the rainy weath
er has caused major delays
in completing the building's
landscaping, sidewalks and
courtyard.
“I hope the building’s
exterior will be completed
on time because the mud is
definitely a hassle when stu
dents walk to classes in
Ledford and enter the Cate
Center from the front
entrance,” said Holly
Bryan, a sophomore.
The building will be com
pleted and ready for spring
semester classes.
Breast cancer
fundraiser a success

Breast cancer is the sec
ond leading cancer-relat-
ed cause of death among
women today. One out of
every eight women will
be diagnosed with it in
her lifetime. This startling
fact led senior Aundrea
Hildreth on a crusade to
bring breast cancer
awareness to Meredith
students.
In the fall of 2000,
Hildreth began Meredith
Cares, a program that has
raised $15,000 for organi
zations such as the
American Cancer Society
for Breast Cancer and the
Susan G. Komen Breast
Cancer Foundation.
Hildreth’s main goal is
to empower women to
become aware of their
own health issues and
risks. "Because this is an
all'femaie school, it is
important for women to
educate themselves on
this topic,” said Hildreth.
Over the past few
years, Meredith Cares has
evolved into a Meredith
tradition, with each year
becoming more and more
successful.
"The first year 1 started
this, we sold t-shirts and
flower carnations. The
second year we had a
silent auction in the Cate
Center, which was lots of
fun to plan, and just last
month we sold t-shirts
and pads of paper. Each
year is a little different,”
Hildreth sai(j.
This year they sold 400
t-shirts, which is more
than any other t-shirt
order they have placed in
the past. Because the t-
shirts were so successfiil
this fall, they may re-sell
them again in the spring.
Fimding for Meredith
Cares has been made pos
sible not only by the
donations that have been
made for the cause, but
also by a donation made
by LeaderShape, which
has covered any addition
al cost that would have
prevented all funds to be
directly donated to the
two organizations
Meredith Cares supports.
They have donated funds
to these organizations for
the past two years.
