PHOTO BY AMANDA COLLINS Juniors give seniors a scare, proposal adds to excitement at Cornhuskin’ 2002. LADONNA LOGUE News Editor This year's Cornhuskin' was full of old traditions and a few new additions. One surprise was the close competition between the juniors and the seniors. The themes this year were "There's no place like UC” Wizard of Oz theme, for the freshmen; "Meredithopoly," complete- with tumbling dice, for the sophomores; fairy-tale princesses with "Happily Ever After" for the juniors; and pyramids and jungles as "Hidden Destinations" for the seniors. The freshmen showed a lot of potential for future Cornhuskin’ events; howev er they maintained fourth place throughout the com petition, with the exception of attendance, in which they ranked second. The sophomores were very competitive, taking first place in attendance and sweatshirts. The jun iors, however, were deter mined to give the seniors a run for the overall title. The juniors won fu^t place in can art, both cate gories of the skit (script and costumes), apple bob bin' and the tall tale. The seniors were left with first place in hog callin', songs, comshuckin' and coopera tion points, giving them the overall win. The seniors had a five point lead over juniors in cooperation points. In the penny barrel event, a total of $2,009.08 in change was collected. As far as the penny colletion, the seniors collected $1,011.62. The juniors came in second with $329.02, and the sopho mores placed third with $107.59. The freshmen col lected $26.20 in their first penny barrel competition. Throughout the competi tion, everyone met all the specified requirements, except for the juniors who were disqualified in hog- callin' for going over their time limit. The overall win would possibly have gone to the juniors if they hadn't been disqualified in this event because of the close ness of the overall competi tion. Senior Lindsay Sutton, a dancer in the skit, said, "We practiced a lot of hours for Cornhuskin', and 1 believe we definitely deserved to win." Seniors reportedly stayed up until 2 a;m. the night before Cornhuskin' to make sure everything was perfect. Entertainment during the evening included a per formance by the Bathtub Ring, the class of 2004’s singing group. The per formance included several of the group’s traditional songs, but their last song was unexpected. The group invited junior Sarah Wiggins to join them on the island and proceeded to sing “Going to the Chapel.” During the song, Wiggins’ boyfriend sur prised her, and the crowd, by presenting her with a ring and asking her to marry him. Wiggins said, "! am the first person in history to be proposed to during Cornhuskin'. It was very sweet." To those who may have missed her enthusiatic response, she said "yes." Despite extremely cold temperatures in the lower forties, Cornhuskin' this year was still as fun as ever.
