Holocaust survivor tells Meredith community about the horrors of hate Oavid Faber tells about enduring the murder of his family and life In, eight concentration camps and living with the memory of the Holocaust MARGARET COONEY AND JONI SMITH Staff Writer and Editor-in-Chlef David Faber, the speaker at the Chapel service last Wednesday, experienced a childhood much different than many of ours. As a young boy, he was routinely called a "Christ killer" at school and teased about being Jewish on the play grounds. These wer the happier parts of his child hood, before the Nazis plowed down Polish defens es in World War II, detain ing Polish Jews in concen tration camps as the troops made their way closer to the Soviet border. In August of 1939, Faber's childhood was ended when Panzer divisions of the Luffwaffe swept into Katowice, his hometown. "I just remember thinking that we were all going to die. We had heard about what the Nazis had been doing throughout the rest of the conquered regions. I knew we were in trouble," Faber said when he talked to Dr. Carolyn Happer's Holocaust class last Wednesday. Happer's class has been reading Faber’s book, Because of Romek, a book that has been widely acclaimed as one of the best ever written from the point- of-view of a child. Because of Romek gives an account of the many heartbreaking experiences Faber endured in the con centration camps. He shares with his readers the night he was forced to watch his older brother, Romek, be tortured to death by notorious Nazi concen tration camp leaders, Grunow and Rommehnann. He tells about the feelings of despair, loneliness, and anger that he felt upon the murder of the rest of his family. Readers also learn about how he was forced to take gold teeth out of the mouths of corpses as they were brought out of the gas chamber, how he conspired with Russian partisans when he only 14 years old, and how, af-age 18, he only weighed 72 pounds when he was liberated from Beigen- Belsen in 1945.
