7 CAMPUi-i FEATURES Riverdance is great entertainment for ail JESSIE WILLSON Staff Reporter Sometimes we complain that Raleigh has nothing to offer, but I was proven wrong just a few days ago. Running until Jan. 26, Riverdance - The Show is a great mix of music, song and dance that carries its audience through a river of emotions. Lacking much dialogue and replacing plot with a simple theme, Riverdance still manages to keep its audience satisfied with its lyrical dance, poet ic songs, and the breathtak ing folk music of the Irish. The dancers were each amazing in their own right, and those in the principle roles shone brightly. The flamenco dancer, Rosa Manzano Jimenez, shows that fraditional Irish dance can be integrated well into another cultural style. However, the greatest example of a cultural mix is found in "Trading Taps." In the scene, three black street dancers juxtapose their style against that of three traditional Irish dancers. The six men duel each other and show off their skills, stealing cheers and laughter fix)m the audi ence. In the end, they come together as one unit of tal ent, personality and beauty. Any seat in the house is great, and tickets should still be available for the last few shows. Call Raleigh Memorial Auditorium or Ticketmaster to get tickets and information. As for future shows, the Broadway series in down town Raleigh has The Full Monty, Grease and Phantom of the Opera on the schedule. Tickets are on sale now through the audi torium box office and Ticketmaster.com for these spring productions. World News Continued from Page 5 protest is just one among many oi^anized by the group ANSWER (Act Now to Stop War and End Racism). They currently have protests in 25 coun tries throughout the world. The Rev. Jesse Jackson spoke in Washington say ing, "Let's choose mind over missiles and negotia tion over confrontation." Canberra, Australia, is in a state of emergency with four people dead and 400 homes destroyed because of fires. The worst fire Australia has seen in 50 years unfortunately came as it also faces one of its worst droughts. Firefighters continue to try to control the fire. Twenty people were injured and seven died in India after a cable that was hold ing up a cable car broke. This was one of many cable car accidents to occur; in 1999, 20 people were killed in a cable car accident at a French resort. In Afghanistan, six American soldiers were wounded this week. Military officials said that five of the six injuries were possibly caused by Afghanistan’s Al Qaeda supporters. Two of the injuries occurred when a bomb went off under a vehicle, and another soldier was shot in the leg while patrolling in Afghanistan. The United Kingdom has also begun to deploy sol diers to the Gulf in its first military action towards Iraq. Troops should be sta tioned in Kuwait sometime in February.
