The Meredith Athletic
Department is gearing up
for its winter sports season.
With basketball in full
swing and spring softball
and tennis soon to come,
the department has much to
be excited about.
"I feel good about our
program," Athletic Director
Jackie Myers said. "We will
continue to progress, but
we already have a good
foundation."
The Athletic Department
will soon receive input
from the newly formed
Student Athlete Advisory
Council. The council is
made up of two students
from each sport and will
meet on a monthly basis.
"[The Council} gives ath
letes a voice to express
ideas and opinions about
the athletic program here at
Meredith," Myers said.
She added that a benefit
of the oi^anization will be
giving students an opportu
nity to get involved at a
national level. Students will
have a voice in legislation
and be able to give recom
mendations, for official rule
changes.
"It's a brand new student
organization that is athleti-
caliy-centered," Myers said.
"I'm excited about it."
Other goals Myers has
for the athletic program
include updates for the ath
letic Web pages and com
pletion of online question
naires for prospective ath
letes. Myers also hopes to
change Meredith's status as
an independent team to
becoming incorporated into
an athletic conference. She
said such a change would
give Meredith more oppor
tunities for post-season
play.
Basketball Coach Carl
Hatchell said the season is
going well, but the upcom
ing games are especially
important to maintaining a
winning season.
"We are getting to the
meat of our season," he
said. "We have a lot of
good teams coming up."
Hatchell added that the
team returned two days
early from winter break to
increase their practice time.
Hatchell said he has been
pleased with the team’s
strong defense and consis
tent foul shooting, which
recently helped the team
win in overtime in
Maryland.
However, Hatchell is
concerned about the team
injuries, including the
recent injuries to key play
ers Beth Vernon and Amber
Scott.
"It's hard for us to put out
that intensity when we're
dealing with injured play
ers," he said. "We've got to
get these bodies healed up."
Hatchell encouraged stu
dents to come cheer on the
Angels during the season.

Chowan at home this
