Virginia Woolf, played by Nicole Kidman {Moulin Rouge), is an author living in the 1920s whose psychological prob lems keep her isolated from society. Her novel, Mrs. Dalloway, personally affects the lives of Laura Brown (Julianne Moore, Far From Heaven), a suffo cated 1950s housewife, and Clarissa Vaughan (Meryl Streep, Adaptation), a New York City editor in 2001. In Woolfs novel, Mrs. Dalloway is determined to give a social party, despite resistance from her friends. Laura Brown, who is read ing the novel, is also plan ning a surprise birthday party for,her husband. Laura feels confined in her role as a typical housewife and is s^ggling to make a decision between life and death. Clarissa Vaughan is throwing a party for her poet fnend, Richard (Ed Harris, A Beautiful Mind), who does not want to attend. Richard, who is dying of AIDS, also ques tions the meaning of his life. Each character is try ing to escape the "hours" they still have to live after their parties are over. Kidman perfectly por trays the tortured mind of Virginia Woolf. Her bril liant acting skills leave audiences in no doubt of Woolfs psychological problems. The film dis plays her wide range of act ing talent, spanning from innocence to sadness to anger. Throughout the film, her facial expressions are distanced as if she were in deep thought, contemplat ing the lives of not only the characters in the novel, but also her own. Kidman's performance recently earned her the Golden Globe award for Best Actress in a Drama. Moore captures the sym pathy of audiences and leads them into her life as the trapped housewife, Laura. Portrayed exquisite ly, her emotions of depres sion and confusion sur round her everyday life. Recently, Moore has received a lot of attention for the dramatic roles she Five Way Friday sure to find new fans witii Wrecked KASEY OVERTON Music Reporter Another band is tearing up the East Coast with the release of its latest record. Five Way Friday, a five- piece rock band fi’om South Carolina, has been around since 1997. But with the release of their third album Wrecked, these boys are sure to gain national recog nition. Wrecked is a compilation of caring and sincere lyrics mixed with some of the best melodies and har monies I’ve heard from a rock band in awhile. Their sound is that of wholesome rock 'n' roll. Throw some Hootie and the Blowfish together with Matchbox Twenty and you have the sound of Five Way Friday. One common goal for this record was "to make a record that captured their live energy and sound." And Wrecked accomplishes that goal. With songs like "Good Girls Don't Lie" and "Return", the boys of Five Way Friday show off their sensitive side. With a blues sound for the guitar and lyrics that speak the truth, "Good Girls Don't Lie" is one of the best songs off of Wrecked. Piano and bluesy guitar solos make "Return" another great song. It's a love song with a different twist. "You cannot return to me/Won't you sit here and wait patiently/For you to return to me/This will be the last time I will watch 5'ou go." And there is more to Wrecked than love songs. Five Way Friday knows how to rock. With songs like "Vision in White" and "Everybody's Angel," the band, combines catchy lyrics with powerful drum and guitar solos. Every song on the album is worth singing along to. I have to admit that I had no clue who Five Way Friday was when I received their latest release. But I took the time to listen to their CD and since then 1 have not been able to take it out of my CD player. Wrecked is one of the best rock CD's I have heard in a long time. Every song is something different with the sound and lyrics. It def initely receives an A+ from me. To check out the band and decide for yourself, catch their performance at the Lincoln Theatre on March 1. has played. Her perform ance in this film shows her talents are well beyond the expectations many have of her. Streep's talent has long been evident in many of her films. The role of Clarissa exposes her to a younger audience and chal lenges her in new ways. However, she meets this challenge with an outstand ing performance. The film proves that her talent will only improve with age. Harris rarely gets recog nized for his acting abili ties, but this film shows that he is a dazzling actor worthy of recognition. He accepts a variety of roles in many genres and always proves he can portray almost any type of charac ter. Harris' talents grow with each fibn, and this role shows his acting abili ty in a role that will help broaden his acting reper toire. The incredible talent of these four actors combines to make The Hours a cine matic masterpiece. The script can be confusing in places, but it can also lead the audience to a deeper understanding of the psy chological confusion that fueled Virginia Woolfs imagination. If you want to see a pas sionate film, rich in artistic direction, and filled with intellect, then see The s Hours". Don’t expect-a feel good movie with tears of laughter but expect tears of a different kind.
