3 CAMPUS FEA TURES After a tough loss, Angels make stunning rebound on the court Meredith wins one and loses one In basketball action last week. TIFFANY ADAMS Managing Editor Meredith's basketball team was defeated by Chowan College last week, but came back this week to win a game against Bennett College. On Thursday, Jan. 30, the Meredith basketball team travelled to Murfreesboro, N.C. to take on the fourth ranked team in the South, Chowan College in their sixth away game this semester. The Angels were defeated by Chowan with a fmal score of 74-66. At half time, Meredith trailed by only two points with a half time score of 30-28. Leading scorers for Meredith were Tina Harkness with 17 points, Tracy Sumner with 12 points, and Beth Vernon with 10 points. According to Coach Carl Hatchell, the team "did a good job at sloping their set plays and defensive rebounding in the fu-st half" He added that miss ing shots and not scoring was the team’s main prob lem in the fu^t half of the game. "The second half we played better offensively but let them get 13 offen sive rebounds," said Hatchell. With six and a half min utes remaining in the game, Meredith led by five points. Despite this lead, the Angels could not stop Chowan nor score enough to stay ahead. Hatchell added, "One big stat is that [Chowan] shot 33 foul shots to our eight." He said that leading Chowan by five points late in the game is an accom plishment because their team is ranked so highly. "Our team felt like we should have won," Hatchell said. Meredith faced chal lenges in this game such as traveling away to play against a successful team ranked in the top five. Hatchell added, "Traveling that far is hard on the team. Sitting in a van for three hours. We won't make excuses for it, because they have to do it when they come here." The Angels will play against Chowan College again on Thursday, Feb. 13 at home. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. in Weatherspoon Gym. On Monday, Feb. 3, Meredith played Bennett College at home. The Angels dominated Bennett with a fmal score of 71-38. Meredith led throughout the game with a halftime score of 33-17. In the sec ond half, Bennett scored only five points. Meredith kicked off the game with a 13-1 run and coasted to the win. Hatchell commented, "I was glad everyone got to play a lot of positive min utes and I thought everyone played pretty good."
