3 CAMPUS NEWS Angels play their way to big yNona News Brief tournament victory and their second NCAA bid Angels will face Randolph Macon College tonight In their first-round game. TIFFANY ADAMS Managing Editor The Meredith Angels won the North Carolina - Georgia basketball tourna ment in Decatur, Ga., this past weekend, defeating both Agnes Scott College and Peace College. Meredith beat Agnes Scott in Friday's tourna ment game 86-43. Hatchell said, "We jimiped on them early and led throughout the game with a half-time score of 46-25. We coasted, through the second half, and every one got to play." Leading scorers for Meredith in the Agnes Scott game were Tracy Sumner with 18 points, Beth Vernon with 13 points, and Amber Scott with 13 points. Meredith beat local rival for the second game of the tournament. The Angels led Peace early on with a half- time score of 46-30. Leading scorers for the final game were Tracy Sumner with 20 points, Beth Vernon and Amber Scott with 14 points each, and Ruth Stephenson and Tina Harkness with 10 points each. In addition to wiiming the tournament, for the sec* ond time in three years the team came home with a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) bid to the Division III National Basketball Tournament. The NCAA is a voluntary association of approximate ly 1,200 colleges, universi ties, atfiletic conferences and sporte oi^anizations. Ei^teen first-round games are scheduled for March 5 and 16 second- round games for March 8. Second-round winners will advance to one of four sec tional sites scheduled for Winners of the four sec tional games will advance to the finals held on March 21 and March 22. All games, except the fmals, will be played on the cam puses of competing institu tions. The fmals will be played at Hulbert Arena, Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute, Ind. ANDREA (illXIKIN Staff Reporter • Khalid Shaikh Mohammed, the al Qaeda leader who is believed to be the top planner of the Sept. 11 attacks, was arrest ed by U.S. officials. The capture of Mohammed was a real breakthrough in the war on terrorism. Mohammed can be linked to every al Qaeda attack in the last five years, e Iraq has said this week that it will not continue destroying missiles if the U.S. keeps pushing for mil itary action against them. Iraqi General al-Saadi said that Iraq has meet Hans Blix’s deadline by destroy ing 10 missiles, e Jacques Chirac, presi dent of France, visited Algeria this week, maridng the first visit they have had by a French president since gaining independence fi-om France in 1962. Chirac gave Algeria’s President Abdeliziz Bouteflika the silver seal of the last ruler of the Algerians, which was taken by French forces in 1830. e Two suspected mem bers of the Italian the Red Brigades were caught this week. Desdemona Lioce, who has been hiding from officials since 1995, and a partner were caught on a train when they pulled a pistol on the train worker who was checking identifi cation papers. The fight left one Italian policeman killed and another injured. • Turkey may reconsider tfie vote to let U.S. troops into their country. The request for U.S. military space in Turicey was turned down earlier this week. Recep tayyip Erdogan, leader of the ruling Justice and Development Party, said, "If deeiiied necessary, this step [a second motion] will be taken." e Police are staging a reconstruction of the last day of the American artist Margaret Muller, who was killed while jogging in London. Muller, 27, was killed in Victoria Paik on Feb. 3. The police hope the reconstruction will help retrace the steps leading up to the murder and possibly help find Muller's killer.
