4 CAMPUS FEA TURES Campus Faces: Charles Davis JESSIE WILLSON Staff Reporter As this year comes to a close, we bid a sweet and heartfelt farewell to our seniors. No one will miss them all more than Eh*. Charles Davis, their class adviser. He, along with his dog Peaches, has been with the class of 2003 firom the beginning, watching them grow into successful young women. As a tribute to him and the class of 2003, he is the subject of this year’s fmal Campus Faces. Name: Charles Davis Hometown: Brevard, N.C. Family: Davis' father was a farmer and executive, his mother was a teacher, and his two sisters (both now living in Brevard, N.C.) have grown up to be teach* ers as well. He is happily married to Gwen Davis and is inseparable from his dog, Peaches. Role model: His wife Gwen - "She's my rock," he says. Education: B.S. in Chemical Engineering, and a Masters and Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics Why he is at Meredith: Davis came to Meredith in 1967 and worked as the head of the math depart* ment until 1980. He worked as the registrar for the next nine years, teach? ing a selection of courses throughout those 22 years. Since the fall of 1989, he has moved back into the math department and has been a foll-time professor. He enjoyed Meredith from the start, and his wife added incentive for him to teach here - she worked in the accoimting deparmient for several years until mov ing on to be the president of the College Foundation, Inc. Years here: 36 Current position: Professor of Mathematics How he got to be a class adviser: "1 told them I would be," he says. Davis heard about the opportunity in 1992 from a colleague and he has been advising since 1995. When the class of 2003 had their first class meeting, Davis told them he was going to be their adviser and said, "You have no other choice." He has enjoyed the job so much that he already volunteered himself for the incoming freshmen. Favorite part of Meredith: Davis says he appreciates the family*type relationships between the students, faculty, staffs alumnae and all those asso ciated with the College. Favorite part of the class of 2003: Davis says they are exceptional young women - extremely talented and a lot of fun. He loves that they have started every class meeting with a lip sync and that they've held high attendance at their meetings all four years. Of course, the cookies and cupcakes from Senior Class President Megan Deane's mother didn't hurt either, he says. Best memory with hb class: Davis says he most enjoyed being able to attend the Ring Dinner with his wife. Favorite movie: "Anything with John Wayne," he says. Favorite restaurant: Foster's Favorite music: Country Favorite book genre: Mysteries Favorite pastimes: Reading and gardening Dream vacation: Davis is excited about the one he will be taking this year with his wife. They will be in Alaska, taking fte ven ture from Anchorage all the way to Vancouver, Canada. Hidden talent: Although Davis was stumped on this one, he did admit to having a talent he wished he had refmed • his piano skills. He took lessons for two years when he was barely in grade school, and his parents gave him the choice to continue lessons or help on the farm. Davis disliked piano so much that he chose to work instead. Words to the graduating class: "Never be a stranger," he says. Words to Meredith stu dents: "Hang in there - your day is almost here," he says. Community Calendar Accent on Africa: Recent Acquisitions of African Art is on display until August 10 at the North Carolina Museum of Art. Phantom of the Opera is being performed at the BTI Center until May 18. Tickets are avail able through Ticketmaster. The North Carolina Symphony will be per forming several concerts In the coming weeks. For a complete schedule, see www.ncsymphony.org. The North Carolina Museum of Art's Summer Film Series will present Giory on May 4 at 3 p.m. Tickets are available through Ticketmaster Theatre in the Park will stage Shakespeare's The Tempest May 1-4 and 8-11.
