Jim Trelease, one of the New York Times best selling audiors, will be on campus Thursday, September 4A for the Meredith READS program (an extension of Motheread, Inc.) at 7:00 p.m. in Jones Auditorium. His programs are known for their humor, wit and dynamics so you won't want to miss it! A gift from Ann Goodnight, Trelease’s visit is in honor of International Literacy Day, which is held each year on September S^L Motheread, Inc. and M^dith College are pro moting literacy in Wake Coun^ by hosting DEAR Day on September 8th. On DEAR Day, every one Is invited wd encour aged to Drop Everything And Read between 10:00 a.m. and 10:15 p.m. Dr. Hartford and Dr. Jean Jackson will be honorii^ ttiis day by bringing a cou ple of rocking chairs to the Cour^ard to read during allotted time. Everyone is invited to bring a cozy blanket and book to enjoy this special occasion. In case of rain, bring your blankets and books to the Rotunda. Trelease, a native of New Jersey, gradu ate of the University of Massachusetts (1963) and father of two, is the auAor of The Read- Aloud Handbook, Hey! Listen To This and Read All About It! Formerly a journalist for a Massachusetts newspaper, he turned his attention to educating children in local schools about careers in writing and art. Shortly after, he began to write The Read-Aloud Handbook, which was published in 1979. Teachers and parents have used his books to strengthen their children's ability to read and love for reading. His books are also used in many tmiversities in their education courses. The Handbook is a compilation of many stories. that can be read aloud. After the publication, Trelease became renowned for his insight and ingenu- i^ about the importance of reading aloud to children and continued on to write two more novels. In 1989, the International Reading Association regarded him as one of the greatest bene factors of the decade to the reading community. (FYI: work. As the founder of Reading Tree Productions, Trelease now visits schools and other institutions to speak to the public about the value of reading. Although he a jam- packed schedule for tiie next year, he was able to squeeze Meredith into it and we are lucky to have him!
