3 CAMPUS NEWS ACA celebrates Hispanic Heritage Kappa Nu Sigma inducts new members KRISTA KEARNEY Features Editor Two panellists spoke last Friday at the Association of Cultural Awareness (ACA) meeting at 10 a.m. The panelists were Jessica Valverde, freshman, and Tatiana Quintero-Varca, freshman. The asssociation invited the students to speak to mem bers about their home country's history and tradi tions as part of National Hispanic Heritage Month. Valverde's parents are from Ecuador and Puerto Rico. She spoke of the rich Spanish traditions she and her family take part in, including traditional dances, such as the salsa, and traditional food they eat, such as sevicha. Quintero-Varca is from Panama and came to the United States just two months ago at the start of the school year. She also spoke about the traditions in her home country. Quintero-Varca is a molec ular biology major at Meredith, and came her to study because schools in Panama did not offer her major. She hopes to move to Europe to work upon graduation. When asked if she would return to Panama after graduating, she said that she would visit but that there are few jobs available in her area of interest. National Hispanic Heritage Month continues throu^ October 15. Salsa and merengue classes were offered on October 1 as part of the celebration on campus by La TertuHa, the Spanish club. Another event, a dialogue on issues surrounding the Latino community was held on October 2. This event was sponsored by El Pueblo, Inc, a non-profit, statewide advocacy and policy organ ization dedicated to strengthening the Latino community During this month, America celebrates the achievements of Hispanic Americans and recognizes their contribu tions to our country. The upcoming Southeastern African- American Smdent Leadership Conference was also covered at this meet ing. The conference, sched uled to be held January 30 through February 1, 2004 at Meredith College, is aimed at promoting and creating leadership oppor tunities in the minority community. SARAH OLSON Contributing Writer The fall semester's induction and award cere mony for the Kappa Nu Sigma Honor Society was held on October 2, 2003. The Meredith chapter of Kappa Nu Sigma, founded in 1923, promotes scholar ship by recognizing aca demic excellence through scholarship awards and membership. The Helen Price Scholarship is awarded to rising sophomores and jun iors who have the highest academic averages in their class. The sophomore scholarship winners are Michelle Elaine Dillman, Sarah Elizabeth Hicks, Sarah Lynn Joyner, Jennifer Marie Niland, Jennifer M. Noel, Megan Frances Shore, Amy Elizabeth Smith, Leigh Meriwether Smith, and Rebekah Lynn Taylor. The junior scholar ship wiimers are Anne Taylor Newberry and Leslie Scott van den Berg.
