Two panellists spoke
last Friday at the
Association of Cultural
Awareness (ACA) meeting
at 10 a.m. The panelists
were Jessica Valverde,
freshman, and Tatiana
Quintero-Varca, freshman.
The asssociation invited the
students to speak to mem
bers about their home
country's history and tradi
tions as part of National
Hispanic Heritage Month.
Valverde's parents are
from Ecuador and Puerto
Rico. She spoke of the rich
Spanish traditions she and
her family take part in,
including traditional
dances, such as the salsa,
and traditional food they
eat, such as sevicha.
Quintero-Varca is from
Panama and came to the
United States just two
months ago at the start of
the school year. She also
spoke about the traditions
in her home country.
Quintero-Varca is a molec
ular biology major at
Meredith, and came her to
study because schools in
Panama did not offer her
major. She hopes to move
to Europe to work upon
graduation. When asked if
she would return to Panama
after graduating, she said
that she would visit but that
there are few jobs available
in her area of interest.
National Hispanic
Heritage Month continues
throu^ October 15. Salsa
and merengue classes were
offered on October 1 as
part of the celebration on
campus by La TertuHa, the
Spanish club. Another
event, a dialogue on issues
surrounding the Latino
community was held on
October 2. This event was
sponsored by El Pueblo,
Inc, a non-profit, statewide
advocacy and policy organ
ization dedicated to
strengthening the Latino
community During this
month, America celebrates
the achievements of
Hispanic Americans and
recognizes their contribu
tions to our country.
The upcoming
Southeastern African-
American Smdent
Leadership Conference was
also covered at this meet
ing. The conference, sched
