Working with the residence life community model of "community service," Junior Neph Bailey was encouraged by Charletta G. Sims to organize girls on her hall to support the Glory House. Once Bailey read the back ground history of the Gloty House, she knew that it was something she needed to do. It was very important for her as a student of Meredith College to support an organi zation that uplifted women and to really put the leader ship skills she was cultivating to practice. She was most impressed that the strong Christian couple who founded the house showed love to everyone who came in, regardless of religious differ ences. Bailey admits that her first visit to ^e Glory House was a little uneasy. She says "I did n't expect to see people my mom's age." When Bailey walked in, she felt the room get very quiet. One lady offered her a drink, and as Bailey drank from the cup, all eyes were on her. She explained that the women expected her to be afraid to drink from cups that they may have drank from. These women assume^ Bailey to be like everyone else and never come close to them for fear of catching HIV. After this initial impression, the women felt comfortable around Neph and friendships began to foim. Bailey commented that girls on the hall were very supportive and gave clothes from their own closets. Friends and family were also supportive and the giving of food, clothes, and toiletries continued until Spring Break! Surprisingly, the donations from Bailey’s hall met the clothing quota that year for the Glory House. Bailey’s hunger to serve did not end there. She, along with several residents, volun teered to get up at 5 a.m. to help with the House's fu^t Phonathon. Money fix»m the Phonathon will go directly to the building of a better Gloiy House, which will accommo date the growing number of women living there. Neph encourages students who want to benefit a small group of people in need to join her again this year in efforts that support the Glory House.
