2 CAMPUS NEWS Capstone students market Arts Access and make a difference CRYSTAL DAVIS Staff Writer There is good news for those who are hearing and vis\ially impaired and wish to watch movies and fully benefit fix>m going to the museum. Arts Access, an* organization providing services to the disables,has programs at many muse ums and theaters in the Raleigh area. The organization's motto is "Making the Arts Accessible to Persons With Disabilities." His popularity in 1927 has been unsurpassed by an single figure or any single accomplishment of modem day relevence. >\^ith admission into this exhibit being free, this might be the best bai^ain in town. The artifacts are unprecedented in their sheer number, but also in their importance to the actual events of the exhibit. I have never seen an exhib it with this many critical pieces or an exhibh that really teaches about the importance of its subject as site listing other organiza tions that use sign language interpretation. ALDs are narration devices that people may use at no extra cost to enhance their experience at the theater or museum. Theaters such as Raleigh Little Theatre, Broadway Series Soudi and Theatre in the Park are just a fewin the area that offer ALDs for a select number of per formances and showings. A new program spon sored by Arts Access is the "Try It" program. The pro gram includes a free ticket for a person with a disabili ty and a guest for a cultural arts event in the Raleigh well as Lindbei^ does. It is a must see. The exhibit was pro duced by the Missouri Historical Society, St. Louis, Missouri, and is sponsored by the Boeing-McDonnell Foundation and Edward Jones. The first event will be Hobson's Choice by the PlayMakers Repertory Company in the Paul Green Theatre on UNC Campus in Chapel Hill on Friday, December 5, at 7:30 p.m. At the event, the audience will get a chance to speak with an Arts Access repre sentative about upcoming shows and facilities. Sign language interpreta tion and Open Caption are also used in theaters such as Carmike Cinema IS, PlayMakers Repertory Company and Theatre in the Park for select shows. Fred Brack, vice presi dent and web site designer for Arts Access, said, 17 at 7 p.m.. Reeve Lindbergh will be speaking at the North Carolina Museum of History. Reeve is the youngest child of the Lindbergh family and will be speaking about her family and her book Under a Wing. To reserve a spot at the speech, you can call the museum at 919-715-0200 or sign up at the museum information desk. "[People] don't know about our services so we’re trying to get the word out."
