8 CAMPUS OPIJSriON
Edwards is more than a Democrat,
He is one of us
would think who do not
know where North Carolina
is and a lot of those who
do, think its part of South
Carolina. I do not know
about you, but having peo
ple think that North and
South Carolina are the
same place bothers me.
We are the tenth largest
state in the union, one of
the original colonies. For
Pete's sake, we were the
FIRST (albeit lost) colony!
Our professional sports
teams, despite both the
NFL’s Panthers and the
NHL’s Hxirricanes locations
in major North Carolina
cities, those teams are
referred to as the
"Carolina" Panthers and
Hurricanes. This has lead
to a "Carolinafication" in
this country and loss of
North Carolina's identity.
On FOX'S "The Best
Damn Sports Show:
Period" a member of the
Philadelphia Eagles was
recently belittled for his
calling the Carolina
Panthers the North Carolina
Panthers. One announcer
quipped, "The North
Carolina Panthers! You
don't even know where the
team is located!" Well, he
was in fact right, the team
is located in North
Carolina!
This is just an example
of our lack of proper repre
sentation in the national
spotlight. How much would
John Edwards running for
president help diat? Simply
take a look at what his run
ning for the par^ nomina
tion has done for press of
North Carolina. In the last
week alone, Edwards has
been written about in the
Nation's most read and
respected newspapers, from
The New York Times and
The Washington Post to
The Boston Globe and the
San Francisco Chronical.
This is a situation where
people can’t refer to tiie
Carolinas but only North
Carolina.
Local, everyday people
have been quoted recwitly
in the New York Times for
their opinion on John
Edwards. More and more
people are intrigued to
learn about where this man
came from and as this hap
pens more and more atten-

Democratic Primaries
might not be in the fore
front of everyone's mind
right now, but they should
be. That is because North
Carolina's own John
Edwards is running for the
Democratic Party's nomi
nee for President. With his
stroi^ second-place show
ing in the Iowa Caucus on
Monday, he is squarely in
the hunt for the nomina
tion.
Over the years, many
North Carolinians have
voted for the extremely
controversial Jesse Helms
on the grounds that his
powerful position in the
government is a benefit to
us here in NorA Carolina.
That would logically mean
these same people would
vote for John Edwards
because, let’s face it, Aere
is not a more powerful
position than President of
the United States of
America.
Well, if you go outside
the southeast, there are
more people than you
KATIE HUGHES

Along with the start of
the semester return all the
problems of the previous
semester-the papers, the
exams, and, worst of all,
the insecurities. (And no, I
don't mean worrying about
if anyone is going to notice
that your Louis Vuitton bag
has Js on it.)
These insecurities of
which I speak are ones that
have been instilled in us for
quite some time - the class
room. For so long, we have
been made to feel stupid
for the wrong answer,
whether by being corrected
by the professor or being
sneered at by the girl in the
front row who had the right
answer. After enough of
these humbling moments,
we have been programmed
to second-guess ourselves
into silence. Too many
times do we sit in class
knowing the capital of
England or who Immanuel
Kant is and not answer
because maybe our answer
is wrong, or maybe our
answer is not deep enough.
Even more terrifying are
those times outside of the
classroom when there is no
exact answer; and no assur
ances that we are correct.
We do not know what the
response will be to what we
have said. This predica
ment raises the question:
can we ever be sure that
what we are saying is
right?
In order to more clearly
explain the question I am
posing, it is necessary to
use some scen^ios in
which this question is
exemplified.
Here's one; Our recently
sii^le Ann goes to a party
at which she meets Andre.
Being of the female persua
sion, she is persuaded into
going on a date with him.
This date goes well and
they begin dating. After
being in a relationship with
Andre for a while, Ann
develops feelings for him.
She dares to say she loves
him. Ann thinks on what to
say, when to say it, calling
into account previous heart
break and the stigma of
tion will be focused on
North Carolina, They'll
learn that he completed his
imdei^aduate studies
across the street at NC
State. He went to law
school at UNC. He prac
ticed law for his entire
career in North Carolina.
Imagine the attention
and notoriety it would
bring if he won the
Democratic nomination?
Nothing in this country gets
covered as heavily over a
long period as the
Presidential elections. Not
to mention election night,
when Edwards would wait
for the resuhs, with mas
sive amounts of media sur
rounding him, here in
Raleigh.
Just look at what Bill
Clinton did for Arkansas
when he was elected presi
dent in 1992? Did you real
ly know where Arkansas
was before 1992? Even if
you don't agree with
Edwards's stances on
everything, you have to
like the idea that the most
powerful man in the free
world is from your state
attacii!
being the first to profess
her love. Without knowl
edge of the dilemma Ann is
in, Andre comes out and
says "I love you" first and
means it. His affections are
returned. They currently
are together and happy.
And another: The termi
nally single Ashley has a
blast and a half with an
otherwise nameless guy at
a similar gathering as the
one that brought Couple
Number One together. The
next day nothing is
exchanged other than awk
ward conversation, during
which Ashley's head (and
maybe heart) is screaming,
"Get his number! Give him
yours! Do something!" Yet
nothing is done. Noting is
lost. And, most importantly,
nothing is gained.
Thus Ashley has just
illustrated the point that I
am trying to make. If you
do not do anything, nothing
is going to be done. If you
arre too scared to say
something and you never
speak out, you will forever
live with your unearned,
and therefore unreasonable,
fear of rejection. This is not
about saying "1 love you"
or getting that hot guy's
number. This is about lis-
tenmg to your heart, aban
doning the insecurities that
hold you back and going
for it, whatever that may
be.
