Pa^e 7 February 18,2004 CAMPUS SPORTS Strong season for Angels JESSICA MAURICE Staff Writer The Meredith College basketball team is contin uing to stay strong, win ning two of three games last week. On Monday, February 9 Meredith traveled to Methodist College only to lose 63-70. The team fought hard the entire game and finally got a break towards the end of the second half. At the four minute mark, Methodist turned over the ball which gave Meredith's Autumn Metzger a chance to cap italize, hitting a three pointer giving Meredith their first lead of the game. With Meredith up 56-55 and four minutes left on the clock, Methodist College took control again. Methodist making 11 free throws in the last four minutes was just too much for Meredith to overcome. Senior Ruth Stephenson made a huge contribution scoring 17 points and get ting 7 rebounds. Meredith College took on Randolph Macon Women's College at home on February 11 and got a win with a final score of 88-68. This game was the epitome of teamwork. Everyone on the team got to play, and played well. With 51 of their 88 points coming from the bench, Meredith dominated the game in every aspect. Shooting 50% from the floor and 68.2% from the line, Meredith took away any hope of winning this game from Randolph Macon. This game allowed freshmen to shine. The two leading scorers of the game were freshmen Autumn Metzger putting up 18 points, and Erin Mitchell putting up 12 points. Meredith went on the road for the second time last week coming back with a win against Salem College. Meredith never gave Salem a chance. Going into halftime, Meredith was up 29-8, and never looked back. Meredith went on to win with a final score of 73- 23. Coming very close behind was freshmen Erin Mitchell who had 12 points and 9 rebounds. Amira Issa dominated the board grabbing 11 rebounds and adding 8 points. Meredith College’s last home basketball game is Thursday, February 19 at 7 p.m., where they will host North Carolina Wesleyan College. On Saturday, February 21 they will play cross-town rivals Peace College at Peace College.
